I received a letter today from HM Revenue & Customs explaining that they'd amended my tax code to include Flat Rate Expenses (FRE) for laundry costs; this includes FRE for the 2004/5-2009/10 tax years.
The reason for this, I wasn’t able to claim for the last six years, 2003/4 and earlier years are out of date.
How this is worked out:
Personal allowance £6475
The law allows everyone who lives in the UK to receive some income before tax has to be paid - a 'tax free amount' of income.
That tax free amount starts from a 'personal allowance' that depends on your circumstances.
Our records tell us you are entitled to £6475 for this tax year, the standard personal allowance for people who will be under 65.
Early Years Adjustment £329
This refers to tax you have over paid in previous years.
&
Flat Rate Job Expenses +£60
HM Revenue and Customs has agreed with the union that £60 is the amount you are likely to have to pay out doing this job. You don't have to be a member of the union to get this.
Tax free amount of £6864
If your employment income (together with any previous employment income of taxable state benefit) for the year is more than £6864 you will pay tax as follows:
At 20% on the first £37400
At 40% on anything over £37400
In practice, your tax free amount is spread over the whole year, so you can receive about £572/month, or £132 a week before the employer takes tax off you.
Don’t know if this would apply to everyone, this is the explanation I received to today.0 -
Hi there im new to this site and have read your comments.I am currently employed as a prison officer and we have to purchase our own shoes and clean our own uniform. Would I be able to claim for both of these.
Previously I was a bus driver for 6 years and also had to clean my uniform myself . Would I be able to claim back expenses going back 8 years now.
thanks , and look forward to your replies

Lugh has failed to ask in his/her application letter for a payable order for past years - its very important that anyone claiming does this.
optional - you need to ask your union whether there is a locally agreed expenses rate for PO's and write in and make your claim. If there is no agreement, then make your claim on the basis of what it costs you. I am pretty sure there are locally agreed rates for bus drivers. You can go back 5 yrs and 10mths. You cant claim for 8 yrs.0 -
i see its £120 for my trade for washing but if i buy my own tools as a stone mason/bricklayer does the one sum on the web site cover them or is there more i can claim and if so how much ...thank u:dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance:0

The £120 is to cover the total costs of replacing tools, providing protective clothing and laundering clothing. If your total expenditure for the year exceeds that, then you can claim the extra.0

My daughter works for ELC. They have a stitched badged logo on both shirts and fleece tops (a lovely (not) shade of purple). They also have to wear and wash ‘promotional T-shirts’ (pretty much 2 weeks in six) which are returned to the company after the promotion period and not for further use. The T-shirts are ‘mega’ promotional and you wouldn’t wear them for leisurewear unless you were paid to advertise!!! The logos on the standard uniform are small, but they are still distinctively company wear akin to Sainsbury’s etc
ELC isn’t just ‘retail’ as there are also ‘play zone/sessions’ where parents entrust employees to play with/entertain their children so employees have to be identifiable from untrusted strangers etc.
It’s retail, but neither food or CRB’ed child care.
Can you claim washing allowance for ELC uniforms?0
