  • Of course you can - its clothing for use at work only, so a deduction will be due. She just neds to write to her tax office setting out a reasonable estimate of the cost of laundry per annum to make the claim.

Length of time to resolve claim depends on your tax office, but I understand most of them have got up to 3 mths post on hand.
  • My wife is a Nursery Nurse and she has to wear a uniform and is responsible for washing it herself. I could not locate a standard agreement that covers her job. What would be a reasonable amount to claim?
  • It depends on how many times a week she washes it.
  • Hi my husband works for a large builders merchants (retail) he has a uniform that needs to be washed daily as it's filthy. Does anyone know if we should put him under the Building section, Building Materials section or as it's retail is that a whole other category.
    Many thanks in advance

  • He works with building materials as far as I can see.

Not usual to require SA Returns just for this relatively small allowance. Are you certain you're in SA for that reason?

How long did you have to wait from sending in your letter

it realisticly only took 3 -4 weeks if not less, when we orginally applied I did not do the letter correctly so it never got a response, but when hubby phoned the tax office they gave him a figure over the phone and then confirmed in writing, he then got a letter within 3-4 weeks but not sure if there was any delay as I stated he did get quoted another figure when he called and got awarded a higher amount afterwards as they spoke to their union about it.. hubby says that some at his work have had confirmation that they have recevied the request and is being processed.
  • Most tax offices have 12 weeks post on hand.

You'll likely just get a revised P2 (Coding Notice). If the allowance is eg £60pa then it will be pro-rata for this year (5/12 of £60 = £25) so your Code Number will increase to 650 (from 647?)

But (same example of £60) will go up to (£7475 + £60 = £7535) 753 from April ....... as the basic personal allowance is increasing.
