  • I received a letter a few days back and HM Revenue & Customs inform me that they are changing my tax code to 753L for April 6th 2011 to 5th April 2012. I'm assuming this will include the Flat Rate Expenses I've been receiving for washing my uniform at home. Is there anywhere I can double check this? I've tried searching the net and HMRC but with no luck.

    Gertie Walker also mentioned back in Semptember of last year (I only just notice this post) that I failed to ask in my application letter for a payable order for past years. I did send a copy of the draft letter posted by the OP so thought I had done this. Nevertheless, I'll make a point of this if I need to write to HMRC again. Thanks for pointing this out by the way. Even so, I have been receiving about £5 every month since they amended my tax code to include Flat Rate Expenses. I double checked last year after they amended this with my old tax code using TaxCentral's Payslip checker.

    The basic tax code for next year is 747L. So you have an extra £60 above the basic allowance which is presumably the 'flat rate'.

    The P2 (Coding Notice) should spell out what the £60 is for?
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    What's the P2?

    Just checked 747L against 753L on TaxCentral's Payslip checker, appears to be only £1 in difference.

    The P2 (Coding Notice) is the 'letter' you have?

    747L is the Code derived from a personal allowance of £7475. The allowance to give your Code of 753L is £7535.

    So that's a £60 difference ........... which translates (at 20%) into £12 less tax per annum.
    If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    Can I claim for 6 years spent working at a now-closed employer?. We were supplied with full uniform which we had to launder ourselves.

    Yes. Makes no difference if the employer doesn't exist the refund comes from the tax you have paid.

    Sorry Mike, I wasn't at home when I was writing the above so wasn't able to check. I had a proper look at the letter I was sent and is exactly as you say - Personal Allowance £7475 Flat rate job expenses +£60 = a tax free amount of £7535.

    So all I would need to do is to write to my local Tax office stating that between x and y I was employed by company z, and they will work-out my refund and send me a cheque then?

    I think you'll find your memory is being optimistic! ;) The £5pm will be the £60 allowance expressed monthly? But the tax that saves is only ever £12 per annum (or £24 if you pay 40%).

    According to the list on HMRC, my profession is £100 p/a (or £20 rebate).
