I work in a rubber factory making tyres, and our uniform is provided what do I put down as my trade?

You are right Mark - there does not seem to be an agreed allowance for your trade.
I don't know what it is like working in the rubber industry these days; but when I was a school leaver 50 years ago, it was a filthy job with a good chance of getting dermatitis. Those who needed some money fast with no previous skills could get a job with The Andre Rubber Company (on the Kingston Bypass = A3 out of London).
If your employer and fellow workers have agreed an allowance with your tax office, you can always make your own claim of what it costs.
I would think that you could claim that your clothing needed frequent cleaning to avoid allergic reactions or does you employer provide disposable overalls these days?
[I worked for a local engineering company. It provided an overall washing service to its employees, but we could still claim the tools allowance]0 -

If you wear a uniform you don't need to be on the list there is a separate rule. The expense allowance is £60/£45 PA depending on the tax year. It's worth £9-£12 PA in tax.
Your uniform must meet HMRC's criteria as a uniform, it helps if it has logos.
The amount of laundry/items makes no difference to the rate unless you want to try and prove it costs you more than £60 per year in laundry.0 -

There is an allowance for nurses £100/£70 PA, you should claim this.
Nurses are one of the few jobs that can claim for shoes and tights but I don't think you qualify for this as your employer would need to have a prescribed style.0 -
Hi
Thanks for this info, never realised this could be done
Is it ok to send the letter as on the 1st page of this thread and just change the allowance to £60??

any idea how you find out what tax office your employer uses (i.e the tax office you send this letter to)?
Thanks0
