    There is a form on the RCN website that can be accessed through this link;

    http://www.rcn.org.uk/membership/taxrelief

Just click on 'tax relief form'.

Thought id put it on in case anyone preferred it to sending a letter, can claim tax back on things like shoes, NMC reg fee and RCN subscription as well as washing of uniform and can be used for backdated claims.
  • Hi,

I would like to know if the following is still in place for the military..
Not Tried This Myself Yet But My Partner Just Receive An E-mail Stating He Can Claim For His Laundry Bill, £ 140 Per Year For The Past Six Years. He Has To Write A Letter Stating His National Insurance Num, Which Service He Is In, Home Address And Work Address To:
    Hm Revenues & Customs
    South Wales Area Service
    Ty Glas
    Llanishan
    Cardiff
    Cf14 5ya

Hope This Helps Some People And Sorry If It Dosnt Work. He Is Sending His Letter Off Tomorrow. Will Let You Know The Outcome.

If so is it as simple as sending a letter and how do you judge how much it costs..

    Thanks

Yes its that simple, just write a letter with your occupation and the tax office will work it all out for you
  • Ok,

I have been reading through this thread and would like a bit of advice.. I am currently in my 5th year of serving in the RAF. I have owned my own house for four of these years but live in the barracks during the week. Sometimes we have to pay to use these machines, other times not(depending on where you live), apart from buying washing powder etc.

If i work off EIM32485(Other expenses: clothing: the cost of upkeep and replacement of uniform and protective clothing: laundry costs) then I am entitled to:

    2010/11 - £60
    2009/10 - £60
    2008/09 - £60
    2007/08 - £45
    2006/07 - £45

But when I look eim32712(Other expenses: flat rate expenses: table of agreed amounts for 2004/05 onwards) I see that the police/fire service both get a different rate. Now I am in uniform just like them and I deal with communications as a technician. Therefore should I be able to apply for a rebate at the higher rates?

Any advice before I draft up the letter?

    Regards,

    SFF

If your job title isn't the same as a police officer or a fire service worker ie. you are a firefighter for the RAF or in the military police you wouldn't get one of the nationally agreed rates. The only way you can get more than the standard £60 pa is to prove that your annual uniform laundry bill is more than £60 per year. You wouldn't need receipts just a reasonable calculation. How much do you spend on washing powder? How much does it cost to use the machines? Some employers do however have locally agreed rates for these FREs which may be worth asking about.

As a member of the armed forces if you write a letter about this there is a very good chance that the tax office will reject it because laundry faclities are provided. You can challenge this but based on what you say here it may force you down the route of having to quantify the actual cost to you of washing your uniform - as some laundry facilities are provided even though the whole cost isn't met.
