You can still claim if wearing the uniform is a requirement of the job - what is the nearest in the list to what he does?

I work as a Carer for a private company, where can I find out what I can reclaim, tax wise??

If you are any kind of healthcare worker you should claim as if you are a nurse:http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM67210.htm

If you have to wear shoes and tights/socks of a prescribed style you can also claim for that: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM67200.htm

If you want an estimate of how much it's worth there is a calculator on this site:http://www.healthcareworkertaxrebate.co.uk/

Would LOVE to do this but my husbands work isn't on there :(

I am sick of washing his uniform as it gets so dirty :rotfl:

As long as he has to wear a uniform and wash it himself he can still claim, it doesn't matter if his job is on the FRE list - if it is though he might be able to get a slightly higher allowance.
  • Hi all, I have put a claim in for the last 7 years in the same job, by looking at the rates I'm entailed to about £700, does anyone know if I will get this as cash or will it just come off my tax code, also how long does it roughly take to process, I sent it off about 4 weeks ago. Thanks x

My friend recently applied for the tax allowance for washing her uniform, they adjusted her tax code for this year and she received a couple of cheques for previous year HTH :)

How far back can you go. I wore company logo'd uniforms from 1993 to 2008 - Asda, Don & Low, Hospital Cleaner & RAC Autowindscreens. Can I claim as far back as this.
I am also about to start work in a Double glazing company where they provide logo'd polo shirts & fleeces for the office if you wish to wear them and the lads in the factory wear them as they are in a dirty enviroment. Thanks
ps I'm a first timer here so any help at all would be great
    Thanks Muchly

  • Just spoke to the tax office about getting my back payment as cash, she said they deduct it off the current years tax unless you specify you would like it as cash on your originall letter.
Also she said it takes about 5 weeks to process.

Do you have to work out your entitlement yourself? Can you just tell them when you started work and they'll do it for you? This thread is too long to read all of it and the link in the first post doesnt work:(

Hello, i enquired tonight about this and actually spoke to Revenue and customs. I hope i can clear things up for people.

IF you wear a logo'd uniform which you wash yourself and the company dont pay or have a laundering facility.

YOU CAN MORE THAN LIKELY MAKE A CLAIM.

Even if you don't work there no more.

You need to write them a letter telling them of the info include.
    • Your occupation
    • that the uniform is logo'd
    • you company don't pay or have facilities to wash uniform
    • how long youve been at the company (maximum of 6 years backdated)
    • also if you prefer the rebate in cash or tax code change.
    • Was told on phone to write REPAYMENT CLAIM on envelope and letter to speed things up.
    Here is the number i rang 0845 3000 627

I have been told i'd be expecting around £120 not bad for a letter and stamp, i think whole process is around 4-5 weeks.

    I'll keep this updated.

Any ideas what a field telecom engineer would claim? installing data cabling and telephone switches...

I'd like to claim for the full £120 but whats the difference between these?
