Anyone know how long it takes to sort out between writing to the tax office and the tax code actually being changed?

I had to start wearing a uniform at the end of October so I sent a letter then. I've been paid twice since posting my letter but my payslips still show my previous tax code. I didn't think it would have been applied to the first payslip as I'd only just sent the letter but surely it would have been changed by now?

I've tried ringing my local tax office but can never get through and can't really afford to stay on hold to an 0845 number for hours on end - so just wondering if I need to be more patient, or go in to see them in person.

THe ICAEW have recently published some research on this:
    http://www4.icaew.co.uk/index.cfm/route/175054/icaew_ga/Faculties/Tax/Publications_and_technical_guidance/TAXREP_43_10/TAXREP_43_10/pdf

Based on this, if you're lucky you'll get a response within 2 weeks, you've got a good chance of getting a response within a month, most likely it will take between 1 and 3 month and there is a significant chance it will take over 3 months.
  • im quite confused as to what a tax code is, any help?
    july 2010 - £12,146
    august 2010 - £11,446
    november 2010 - £8793
    april 2011 - £6175
  • Just sent in form P87 for y/end 2005 for the washing costs deduction. OH has been working there since march 2005. Not sure if he will get it for that year as it was only one week before tax year end, but hopefully he will get it for 2006 onwards. Crossing fingers etc.

HMR&C's default procedure for refunding this tax is by adjustment to your tax code, sometimes they do this even if you clearly and explicitly ask for a cheque. If this is listed on your P800 as something like "previous year's adjustment" you'll get all of the refund paid through your monthly pay.

Otherwise I'd say it can easily be 4 weeks between the P800 and the refund, usually you get a letter and a tax comp telling you how the refund is made up before you get a cheque.
  • I've just read through this thread and my letter is now in the post, finger crossed and thank you OP.

i've read through a few pages and no one has referred to washing your uniform if you are self employed - I take it there are no allowances if you are a sole trader who wears a logoed uniform?
  • I don't see why not.
You paid for the uniform and claimed that against tax.
Now you are washing it to make it last and look good.
