Yes you can and you can go back up to 6 years. There is no fixed rate deduction for your job, so you will have to suggest a reasonable amount to HMRC.

hi my hubby just recieved a letter from the tax in it it states his flat rate expenses are £140 per year we recieved a small tax rebate last week now nothing this week ,when i spoke to hmrc today they say that if he is in the 20%tax bracket then he only gets 20% of the expenses back for previous years is this right can anyone help with this

from what they say he was awarded £992 in previous years expenses but acording to the hmrc he will only recieve 20%of this

Yes I know it's an old post, but the answer is still relevant and of general relevance.

Correct - he will only get 20%. You don't get the expenses back, you get the tax on the expenses back, which is 20% of them.

    What a great thread!!!

A few months ago, hubby received a letter from Royal Mail about change his tax code to account for uniforms. Rather than a 603L he now has the code 615L. To my calculation that means he is being given a raise in personal allowance of roughly £115 -£120 this year to account for uniform washing.

My question is, would this include the tax refund for previous years based on a fixed rate expense of about £60 a year?

If so, will his tax code change in the future based on the personal allowance + £60 (ish)?

To answer this question, he needs to ask his union rep what the agreed fixed expense allowance is for postmen - I believe it is agreed locally.

If he's being given a £60 allowance then yes that tax code change covers two years and it would go down to 609L (or the equivalent) next year.

OTH the £115 (ish - I make it £120) could be a year. Depends exactly what the letter said.

Thanks fengirl and dzug1. I'll hunt out the letter, but I'm fairly sure it said nothing about actual amounts or timescales, just that they were aware there was an issue with uniform allowances and they would be looking into it and automatically changing the tax code in due course.

I remember having a conversation with hubby about it. He got all excited at the thought of wonga and I laughed and said "yeh about £15 a year" and his face fell. I guess he thought a holiday might be in the offing with a tax rebate:D

I'll get hubby to ask his union rep about it.

  • That is awesome (made me laugh when I read the title) but a great tip...I wonder whether it includes suits, etc...I doubt it however, although mabe for Self Employed people....cool tip, thanks.

A claim for the cleaning of suits would only have a chance of suceeding if you could show that they were subject to exceptional soiling, eg a surveyor who has to do site visits with mud and dust, etc. Self employed people can only get a deduction for specialist clothing (the same as for employees). For both employees adn self employed, the claim has to pass the 'wholly and exclusively' test. Thsi means that the expense has to be incurred only for work/business and that the item is only used for work or in the business.

you will have to write to your hmrc office to claim anything for previous tax years. They will assess your tax for each year and repay if appropriate. So if you're paying tax at basic rate then you'll due expense allowance x basic rate tax to be repaid. You can claim for 6 tax years. If you have worked for your employer for many years get your claim in before 5/4/09 to claim back the maximum number of years.
