You have to specifically ask for a cheque, which is why I included it in my letter above.

    Hello

I work in an office, currently wear my own clothes but there is talk of introducing a uniform (which our sales team currently wear). They have said this will be voluntary but if we ask for a uniform we have to wear it.

So...I think it's worth me having the uniform as then I won't have to buy my own shirts for work. But will I be able to claim an allowance, given that the uniform is optional. (If it makes any difference the uniform consists of a suit, shirt and tie, but they're all company branded.
    Happy New Year

Would it be too late for me to ask for a cheque then? Sorry, I didn't see your letter above.

You could try, but don't count on it.

I think this amendment of codes to take into account past years' overpayments is highly unfair and is a recent development (presumably due to staff cuts). It means that, effectively you are waiting for a whole year more to get your refund because the allowance in your code is spread out over the whole of the tax year.

Once upon a time, we trained staff to check for fixed rate expenses automatically every time someone changed jobs (along with a general review of their code numbers). Now, I am not sure that HMRC staff even see taxpayer records when people change jobs.
