gems - you are entitled to a refund by cheque. The basic rate of tax for previous years is 22% and 25%. By altering your code for this year in repsect of previous year's relief, you are only getting tax relief at 20%. You need to write and point this out.

What the tax office do is called an earlier years adjustment. They work out what refund you are entitled to for each year involved and then convert this figure into a relief for the current year, so that when operated against your pay you get the refund via your wages.

So if you were due a refund of say £50 cash the would put a relief in your code of 250 (£250*20% = £50)

But as stated you should check your coding to see if it actaully gives you the back reflief due.

N.B. they should also add on any interest due to you

Now that the tax office adjust your tax code, what would happen in my case?

I have a regular job which earns less than the tax threshold but also have an occasional second job which pushes above the threshold and gets taxed on the whole earnings. Each year I have been able to claim back the correct amount but if they adjust my tax code they'll still owe me tax back. How would I get the tax back if they no longer send cheques out?

The tax office can and will issue cheques if you specifically ask them. If they change your coding rather than refunding you directly you can make a compliant.. and they do listen to compliants
  • I work in the caring profession and often have to go into houses that aren't always particularly clean. I therefore need to launder my clothes more often. I do however wear my own clothes.
I also have to work outdoors visiting clients etc. and need a waterproof jacket and good sturdy footwear.
Do you think I would qualify for an allowance.

Also, my partner had to buy a laptop for a trianing course (his employer had none spare for the residential course). Would he be able to claim a tax allowance on this? The course would be extremely difficult if he didn't have access to a computer/internet.

    Thanks in advance.

The company that i work for issue cleaning tokens for cleaning uniforms.

However i always wash my uniform at home, it`s always a pain chasing down the person who issues the tokens and our nearest cleaners is not convenient to get to, also it would mean a couple of bus rides or paying for more petrol to get to the cleaners in the first place as it`s nowhere near my normal route.

Bearing in mind that tokens are available does anyone know if i would quilify for the tax reduction instead?

lobster. There is no relief for the laudry of normal clothing - we all have to be clean! Your waterproof jacket might be a runnner, but you would need to convince HMRC that you only use these items for work and wouldnt be seen dead in them outside work. Also, only replacement items are allowable.
The laptop would not be allowable unless the duties of the employment required it.
