I work for a nursery and we are supplied with an initial uniform but have to pay for any additional uniform. After looking at the HMRC website I can see that I can claim tax relief for washing/purchasing uniform. Would claiming have a negative effect on my employer, as in would there tax bill increase etc. As employer is also a friend I do not wish to cause them hassle etc.0

hello, I am so sorry if I have missed this, but would a farm hand wearing his own clothing but with overalls over the top be able to claim? his clothes are often covered in manure and a hot wash has to be done after to clean the machine of the smells! many thanks0

As far as I know it doesn't.hello, I am so sorry if I have missed this, but would a farm hand wearing his own clothing but with overalls over the top be able to claim? his clothes are often covered in manure and a hot wash has to be done after to clean the machine of the smells! many thanks
As far as I know the uniform has to be a requirement of the job and have a logo. You cannot claim for your own clothes for laundry.
Although in terms of looking after their own clothes the overalls might be essential, does the farmer require them to wear them?
Do the overalls have a company logo?
Does the farm hand have to clean the overalls themselves?
Barring that, it might be worth the farm hand buying clothes specifically for the job and doing a one time tax claim against the purchase price at the end of the tax year. (I have the laundry allowance, but other parts of the uniform we have to provide ourselves and I'm claiming for them this year)0 -
Just a note to say it works, got my letter today; tax code increased by £60! ThanksHelp me to help you :santa2:0

Please rrefer to my previous posts ad nauseum. Most trades, including farming have a fixed rate deduction for overalls, boots etc. Refer to 'fixed rate deductioons on the HMRC website.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I was thinking of claiming tax back for washing my uniform when I worked in Asda, however I don't work there anymore and I don't wear a uniform for my new employer, so do I contact my old Asda tax office or my new tax office.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
Cheers
If you have already sent your letter to the HMRC office that deals with Asda, please send it again. It needs to go to the tax office that deals with you now. The office you have sent it to will not open your letter straight away (backlogs are anything from 6-10 weeks). Once they realise it is not theirs to deal with, they will forward it on to the correct office and it will then wait in their post queue, so better to just send the letter again!0 -
