    What a great thread!

I am unformed Fire & Rescue so rang my Tax Office to give it a try. The man I spoke to says that this allowance should be automatically added to my tax allowance when I join the job but in my case it does not look like it has. He is going to look into it but he said I should receive a new coding and refund within two weeks!!! Will have to get all my colleagues to check!

Have only been in the job since end of 2006 but this is great! Thanks to OP.

I am not a tax expert, merely a member of H.M.R.C. club. (of the paying variety)
Your employer has decided that in order for you to perform your duties, you need to buy things and being a benevolent sort of chappie he realises that it would be in his interests to pay you back the money which you have spent in buying these things. Somewhere along the line, it was decided that £140 was what the cost of these things were so he paid you an extra £140 on top of your wages. Unfortunately what he gave you with one hand, he took back £22 with the other 'cos this is what the tax is @ 20%. You have now spent £140 but have only received £118 (£140 less £22 tax) and are therefore £22 out of pocket. H.M.R.C. realise that this is not really on so out of the goodnes of their heart (:D ) they give you back what they had taken off you in the first place. Result, you are not now financially disadvantaged.
Hopefully this is correct but it may be wise to wait until someone more expert in this field can confirm the situation.
  • oooh would this apply to me? I work in Blockbuster in my 2nd job and have to wear logo'ed tshirts. My tax code is BR on this though? xx

Any money back from HMG is a bonus lets face it, but when looking at prior responses over cleaning uniforms they seem to be saying for example that its cost £60 to wash your gear each year and the revenue has agreed and returned that £60 not as you've quite rightly suggested eddie that you shouldnt pay tax on that £60.
Of course if my mate ends up with a £200 cheque in the next few weeks it'll answer the question :)

I think its been covered in one of the other 17 pages and the answer was yes :)
  • hi, sorry if this has already been covered - I did try and look through all the pages but might have missed it. I was thinking of claiming tax back for washing my uniform when I worked in Asda, however I don't work there anymore and I don't wear a uniform for my new employer, so do I contact my old Asda tax office or my new tax office.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Cheers

It'll be your tax office, which from my own experience was always Glasgow. After 20 years I seem to have moved back to England :)
Your Regt admin office should know the address.
BTW Anyone got an answer to my question on page 17?
