A fixed rate deduction is an expense allowance agreed between the unions and HMRC designed to give a fair expense allowance according to a particular trade. These are udgraded occasionally. Some fixed rate allwoances are agreed locally, for instance I think postment had an agreed allowance which was negotiated at a local level.
30 years or more ago, when I trained as a baby tax inspector, we were trained to give the fixed rate deduction automatically when we were dealing with taxpayers starting a new employer. For example, if someone started at the local Indian takeaway, they were a worker in the food industry and were allowed £25. they didnt need to claim it, they were just given it. HMRC staff seem too overstretched to pay attention to these fine details now and that is why this thread is so annoyingly long.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Just wanted to say thanks so much for those who posted in this thread, I wrote to my tax office in june requesting that they reviewed my tax code in light of the laundering of uniforms, footwear requirement and renewal of registration to NMC (nurse). Well I recieved a nice repayment today that will cover my tv licence and MOT that are due next month. Lovely august for me thanks to the advice on here!0

KTBennet, the change to your tax code will mean that less tax will be deducted from your earnings. You will receive the benefit of the increase in your tax code through your regular pay, which should be a bob or two higher than last week/month.
HTH
I dont earn enough to get taxed at the moment but i am still having to wash my own uniform at a cost so i have been doing this for over seven years i would have prefered a cheque instead of my tax code changing
this is what i told them in the letter too that i would like the rebate in a form of a chequeLast year i won a holiday to vegas, £1000 from mccains lots of lego and some other stuff so far biggest win this year a pen worth £2k and lots little wins from daileys0 -
My company employs home carers to look after older people in the community (domiciliary care or home help), and I feel that they should be closer in category to nursing home nurses, so I'm looking to contact HMRC and try to negotiate a specific allowance above that of the standard uniform rate.
Has anyone successfully done that here? (Whatever trade, but if in home care, that would be a bonus!) It's a straight forward case to put forward I guess, it's just something I haven't done before!0 -
It's not really your place as an employer to negotiate tax relief on behalf of your employees. The first thing that HMRC are entitled to ask is why you are not paying for the laundering of uniforms! This would be far better coming from a union or staff rep. They would need to show that the cost of laundry for these people's uniforms is higher than for nurses, and the reason why. HMRC will be reluctant to agree a special deduction for a small group of people as this would set a precedent - they will be happier with agreeing that your staff fit into an already agreed category.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I work for Sainsbury's as a second job and so my tax code for that job is BR - can I put my main tax code for other job, or would it just mess everything up for trying?0
-
My tax codes were round the wrong way, I was on BR for the wrong job, you need to ring them up, as I did yesterday and they'll explain what to do over the phone, was very simple. If they're wrong it means you may not be benefitting proper from your allowancesFantastic Expectations Amazing Revelations0

I have gone for it! Sent a letter to my local tax office... Work for NHS! Trying to claim back Footware, Uniforms and NMC fees, spoke to someone on phone they said yeah just put it in writing.
Thanks OP! This thread needs a bump! Its brill!0 -
Just had my new tax code sent through and the cheque, but have I have I had a thick attack?
I get a flat rate expense of £140 for my job, I took this to mean that I was due to get back that amount in overpayed tax last year.
New tax notice is saying that I shouldnt be paying tax on that £140 which works out at about £22 a year.
Given that my mate who started with me and sent off a letter just after me got told that she was only due an FRE of £80 a year, I know that they make errors.
BTW That was sorted with a phone call in about a minute but if we hadnt been talking she'd have never known.0
