Hi all,I did this following advice on here and just got a rebate of £60 plus I have been informed that I now will save £60 a year in tax from now on,it was easy to apply and needed no receipts, just a bit of a pain filling in separate forms for each year, luckily I only had to do 3 so not too bad,but well worth doing it just to save money in coming years.
For ordinary commercial relationships it is possible to go back 6 years (or 5 if you are under Scottish law) but HMRC gets to write its own rules. This used to be just under 5 years 10 months from the end of the tax year but now have been reduced to 4 fiscal years.
The reason why the last day of the fiscal year is 05 April dates back a couple of centuries and then back into the church calendar of ancient Rome.

The financial year end was 25 March but the calendar was updated and 11 days were lost from the year.
The general population, no doubt led by accountants, realised they were paying more tax than they would have otherwise have done and rioted uner the slogan "Give us back our 11 days"
25 March plus 11 days gives us 5 April. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Are you sure it was not the other way round, where the head tax man did not want to go to the Chancellor and say that the tax take for the year was down because of lower profits/transactions caused by the "missing" 11 (ie tax free days) in the next year when tax day for the previous generally agricultural year would have come 11 days early:D
Anyway 25th of March is Lady Day, when somehow the Angel Gabriel arranged the happy event for the Virgin Mary.
I think some of the peasantry were worried that they might die 11 days younger than otherwise would have been the case..0 -

Cant believe that some work colleagues still dont know about claiming tax back on RCN subscriptions, washing uniforms at home, tights and shoes. Its not alot every year but every little helps. Unison send out a claim letter every so often, as I have been claiming for years I usually stick these on the noticeboard for others to use.
It is so easy to claim and everyone should.0 -
Managed to get through after ages spent on the phone. Asked for laundry costs etc as I am a nurse. Got NMC and union too. They have altered my tax code from 191L to 286L.
Am I likely to get a cheque through or refund through pay? forgot to ask.
Anyone shed any light please. Glad I did it has been on my to do list for ages.If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0 -

Hi just need a bit of advice, I work in a sheet metal place and when I looked at the job list on HMRC it said aluminium workers can claim £120, I have filled the forms on the website for the last four years and printed them, now can I send them all in one envelope and do I need the cover letter or will the forms suffice? Or can I do it all over the phone, It does confuse me a bit as I'm not very good with paperwork but certainly not going to a company that will do it for me.
Thanks for any help0 -
I did it all in one phone call. Took a while to get through but worth persevering. If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0
