I am a mother of three young adults, 16, 21 and 22 all of whom have uniformed part time jobs and are non tax paying students living at home. As I do all the laundry (and pay tax) can I claim a rebate or if not can they even though they don't pay tax?

    no and no
the claim is for a refund of tax paid, but they don't pay any, hence no
    and
whilst you may be their mother and do the laundry for them, technically it is not your cost as the dirty uniform is not yours, hence no

you could of course charge them for your laundry services and then pay tax on that yourself as it would then count as part of your income, they would still not be allowed to claim though as they remain non tax payers but at least that way you would get paid for your time (if that is your objective?)
  • Do I need to fill in and print a claim form for each tax year I want to claim for? I need to go back to 2011 so it's going to be a thick envelope if so!

I've checked my taxcode - 1000L. Does that mean I can't get any more or can I still claim for my uniform, shoes, RCN,NMC fees?
I can nurse but useless as tax stuff! Keen to learn though...

I followed the guide, but had two different jobs (the previous one was seasonal too!), so made a little table outlining when I was employed from and to.

I asked for my tax code to be adjusted and the difference paid by cheque, which turned out to be £342!

    THANKS MSE!

I ended up writing a guide for the guys at work to do the same, most of which had their tax codes adjusted for the year to take into account the savings, but everyone got between £100 and £200 back, which made me worker of the month :P
  • I work in a hotel and I do get my uniform laundered by the hotel. However, can I claim back for tights and shoes?

I haven't applied for the laundry allowance, but I noticed that my tax code had changed on last months wage slip, from 1000L to 1006L. I have paid about £10 less tax than previous months. Any ideas why it has changed as I have not received any notification about it?
