For some reason, my OH doesn't believe it's possible to claim a rebate on costs of washing his Sainsbury's (logoed) uniform, even after looking at the relevant section on HMRC's website. He says they require receipts as proof. Could anyone please tell me if this is the case, as from what I've read, this just isn't the case.

    TIA
    you have read the guide
    you have read HMRC website
don't see how you expect random internet strangers comments to be any more convincing regarding how wrong your OH is

get him to read the guidance properly and phone HMRC if he is struggling with understanding any big words
  • Hi all,

I have just discovered I am eligible for this. I work for Royal Mail and have done so since 03/05/2011. I have filled out the P87 form, do I need to do one for each year, '12/'13/'14? I believe the flat rate I can claim is £60 for washing it?

    Thanks.

They don't require receipts and you can do it by phone (first thing in the am is usually best). Basically all they need to know is where he works and what he does/wears. They have set rates for most things and a default rate for others. What they may do is amend this years tax code & send a refund cheque for the last 4 years, if he has been there that long. The current tax year and the previous 4 complete tax years is as far back as they will go.

I'm Royal Mail too. I did this quite recently and got some money. I filled in forms for each year and sent them away. A few weeks later a lady from HMRC phoned me and talked me through it. Another week or so later I had my money. Happy days.
  • Stintastic, thank you very much. I have all the forms filled out and saved on my computer so I will send them off this week. I am amazed they never tell you about this at work. I bet half the people in there don't know about it.

    You know what they're like.
  • Hi all,

I am a chef and I know how to claim for the last 5 years thanks to this website.

My question is can I claim for knives and safety shoes that were not supplied by my company?

    Thanks in advance.
  • I filled in and sent claim form P87 tax relief forms to HMRC . Today I have received a letter asking for my P11D expenses & Benefits forms for the years 201314/15, or if I do not have these, ask my employer for a letter on their headed notepaper with the details from the original form. I work in a school kitchen, therefore do not have these, neither does the school. All I trying to do is reclaim a small amount of tax for washing my uniform. What do I do now?

My OH wears a uniform to work, so a couple of months ago, thanks to the information on this website, we filled out the letter to send to HMRC.

We covered the current tax year and the previous years (as he's worked for the company for over 5 years).

Result - a cheque for the previous (several) years rebate (now safely in his ISA) and an adjustment to his tax code for this year.

Took all of 10 minutes work :)

  • Hi - I work in a hotel and have to wear suits or "business attire" and purchase and launder them myself. Would you think I would be entitled and if so do they contact your employer or is it discreet?

    Thanks,
