Booksur, thank you for your speedy and helpful reply. I will have a good read of the links..0

there is only one list and it is the link in the first post of this thread
assuming you are in healthcare, since that is the post you quote, there are only 5 options a) - e) I would have thought they were self explanatory
if you cannot work out which category you belong in then you probably don't belong in any of them, in which case, assuming it is a genuine uniform you wear, the default rate is £60 for any uniformed worker
Yeah I saw the list and what's there is self explanatory as you say. I'm actually a postie and couldn't see any relevant category. You may have answered my question though as I didn't know there was a default rate. Thanks for that.0 -
I phoned them about washing my uniform at home. They said on the phone they might just change the tax code to reflect this.
I also asked about business mileage, they said they'd send a P87 out in the post but they didn't, so after three weeks waiting I printed out an online form at the local library.
Then I sent in the P87 just claiming for the mileage, but when my rebate cheque arrived last week it added an extra £100 flatrate payment which I assume is for the uniform laundry costs.
Result!! :j

Hello all....I am sending off a P87 on behalf of my husband to assist him in reclaiming tax for his uniform and to also try to get something back regarding his subscription to Unison for his job within the Ambulance Service (I noticed others have tried and succeeded with this too). Basically he has worked for the Ambulance service since 2008 and has been doing front line work since this time.
I hope someone may be able to assist me with the following questions:
- It appears that I am unable to complete for the tax years prior to 2011..is it correct still that you can claim for the passed 6 years? If this is the case should i write a letter explaining I would like to claim back this far just their template doesn't allow?
- Do I complete the form for each tax year, print off each and post altogether?
- Finally should I send a letter detailing hubbys job, uniform etc as per templates on this thread? And what do I do re the Unison payments (he has been paying since 1st April 2009) do I need to send evidence?
It is just that at the end of the form it states not to send any other paperwork with the P87 form? Hence I am confused but then again it is 1am!:o
Thank you very much for any help
Tired and off to bed now but will be sorting this out tomorrow morning without fail :T

I hope you are filling out the correct form and not something his union sent him or heaven forbid a form from a claims company?
you can only go back 4 years to 10/11 , annoyingly MSE will not update their guide despite being asked to do so repeatedly
10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 13/14 is four historic years, We are now in 14/15 meaning the current year plus 4 historic years. That is the limit...it is one form per tax year since that is how the form is set out
for unison you look on the unison website and find out what figure you can claim, this is in the members only section so I cannot see what it is. Typically with unions you can only claim a % of the full cost of his subscription since the union bit is not tax deductible, only the professional support bit of this "learned body"!
Think carefully about using any form itself on the union website - typically such a form will have small print instructing HMRC to treat the union as your agent and therefore for HMRC to pay a % of your rebate as commission to the union forever more so he will get less0 -
I am about to claim too, thank you for the info Booksurr it's very helpful.0

what template?

Thank you Booksurr for your help
I can confirm the template is one on the HMRC website (I had to log several calls to get this working as it wouldn't open for a few weeks) and there is a letter on the start of this thread which appears was used previously and it was for this I was wondering if you still need to write explaining the situation when I send off the relevant forms?
Thank you for the advice re the Unison element too. I will look into this and have spoken to my hubby who confirmed Unison used to send out forms claiming money back and now understands why they recommended to use their forms (so they can take a cut it seems). I will check this one out too.
Just to clarify...do I need to send a letter with the P78 form and do I need to complete each tax year and post together? The HMRC form says to NOT send any further paperwork with the form
Many thanks

I didn't fill any forms in just rang 0300 200 3300 gave them all my details from my payslip (nhs) and within 2 weeks I received a cheque for over £100 this morning
What I don't understand is the paperwork from the tax office only relates to the year 2012-130 -
Hello, I just wondered if anyone could tell me how long the claim process took? Thanks in advance :-)0

Mine claim was sorted and cheque received within 2 weeks.
I did mine over the phone 0300 200 3300, it took around 20 minutes on hold but process only took 4-5 minutes.0
