Can anyone advise please, I sent off my letter worded as per the advice given by Martin and asked for a cheque rather than a change in my current years tax code.

lots of sheets arrived with calculations for the past four years. All showing amounts due to be refunded.

I thought the refunds would all be added up and sent as one cheque, but I have in a separate letter received one years refund, for 2012 to 2013.

Do you think I will need to phone about the other years or is it that the years refunds all arrive separately?
Did others get one cheque or several for the different years?

    Thanks for any advice.
  • I used to work in retail for over 10years and we had to wear the clothes that were sold in the shop as our uniform and buy new uniform every season, as once the stock had sold out we were no longer allowed to wear it,
we used to receive a discount towards that, but it was also a taxable benefit.

am I entitled to claim anything back and if so how far back can I go? some of the clothes were dry clean only which you had to pay for yourself. the company did not provide any washing allowances.

    thanks!

did you actually read the guide before posting?

in what way would ordinary clothes that were sold in a shop to its customers constitute a uniform????????????
    - fixed logo?
    - recognisably a uniform?
  • Hello please can anyone explain everything to me? :(
i work as a health care assistant and i want to claim the money for washing my uniforms. (there are 2, so do i get for both of them?)
The form that i need to fill in is p87?
After i complete mine and employers details which other section do i need to fill in?
i found on EIM67200, section 336 and 367 ITPA 2003, that i can claim for shoes 12£/year, and also socks 6£/year, also at
    EIM32712, section 367 ITEPA 2003 for uniform as a healthcare assistant 100£/year.

How do i know how much they have to give me back?
    is there true?

i need to send the form here? HM Revenue & Customs, Pay As You Earn Self Assessment, PO Box 1970, Liverpool, L75 1WX?:think::think:

    thank you ;)

You're best not to use the form. You're better off to write a letter to your tax office. State that you are responsible for washing your own uniform and would like to claim tax relief for that.

Include your name, address, DOB and NI number.
Give your employer's name and address, your job title and your dates of employment.

If you are sure that the shoe and tights relief applies to you (only if you're required to wear a specific colour of tights for example, or if there is a set type of footwear required as clearly everyone has to wear some shoes to work) then add that to your letter, making sure to mention those points that make clear that you're eligible.

If you've been in your job a few years, you can ask them to backdate the allowance and they should do this for you. The tax office will calculate the relevant amount and should send you a new coding notice so you'll pay less tax.

  • How can i find out the address of the office from Northampton? Do i need to send it to HM REVENUE from Northampton? I need to claim only from last year as a health care assistant and i just changed my work place but the field remains the same, so do i need to ask them to change my tax code?
    Thank you.

Sent off the letter as advised. My tax code changed (£60 allowance), and I got a cheque sent to me for 4 years backdated. The bit that is confusing, is the cheque is for £44.97 .... is that the right amount for 4 years?

Depends on your tax code, but roughly, yes. £60 allowance is £12 per year for a basic (20%) taxpayer.

Thanks for the reply and explanation ... I guess I got it into my head that I'd be getting a backdated cheque for £240
