If you are registered for tax you will send ot to your tax office.

The details will be on any tax coding notice, or your P60 or any other correspondence that you have from the tax office.

If you are not registered for tax then it depends what the claim is for.

I wrote in to the tax office using the guide on here and less than three weeks later a cheque for £26 arrived. Then a letter arrived thanking me for my letter and stating they had not worked out last years so would be in touch about that. Its not loads but not a bad return for the effort involved.

I worked in the electronics industry between 1998 - 2008 and I had a anti static coat which had the company logo on it. I took my coat home to be cleaned every 2 weeks, until about 2006 when the company introduced their own in-house laundry.

I was also been a student at University between 2011-2014 and we had to purchase our own laboratory coats, but they never had a logo on them. We had to wash our own coats.

My partner has been a hairdresser since 2000, they do not have a uniform with a logo but have a dress code (black) they sometimes wear protective aprons.

Are we able to claim anything based on these scenarios?

    Thanks

the earliest you can now claim back to is the tax year 6 April 2010 - 5 April 2011, so you are too late to claim for your employed job

students don't pay tax so you can't claim for a tax refund as you hadn't paid any tax also it would not qualify as an allowable expense anyway since it was not related to an expense incurred on a paid job

her black clothing does not qualify as a uniform - read the guide linked to from post #1 and the first result if you google "HMRC" and "other protective equipment costs"

so she could claim for the purchase of the apron (if she had to pay for it herself) but not her clothes
she can claim for the cost of laundering it, but I have no idea how much she can claim for as the laundry rates relate to "uniforms", not protective aprons/overalls - she should phone her tax office and ask!

I claimed for my uniform a few years back and have, upon checking my wife's taxes noticed that she hadn't got the allowance on her tax code. We applied for the rebate and sent of letters etc. and got the reply today.
They have amended her tax code for this year but awarded no rebate. She phoned them to question this and was told that they are not backdating any claims now.
Has anyone heard this as I noticed people are still getting backdated rebates. Are HRMC trying to pull a fast one on us?

What did they say? Did they send a letter to explain why they haven't backdated it?

Claims can still be backdated to 2010/11. That hasn't changed.

"I can confirm that I have today issued a revised PAYE code for 2014/15 to include flat rate expenses from 2010/11 to 2013/14 this will be shown as earlier year adjustment 2014/15 will be shown as fre"
I'm not sure as to the last bit "fre" maybe a typo.
When the wife phoned they said that they backdate rebates, but now she's given me the letter it appears that they have adjusted her tax code for this year to allow for the rebate.

FRE stands for Flat Rate Expenses. They have put an earlier years adjustment in her code, so they have backdated the claim to 2010/11. She is getting the money back but she's getting a little bit at a time spread throughout the year (basically she'll pay less tax this year to make up for it). Sometimes they do this if you don't specifically request for the repayment in the form of a cheque.
