  • I wrote a letter on my hubby's behalf and we soon received a cheque for £40.05 and I think it's last tax year, and this one, is now reflected in his tax code.

All for the price of a second class stamp!

  • My husband is retired and pays tax. He works at a hospice as a volunteer and has a polo shirt uniform that we have to wash each week. Can he claim
  • Hate to be a pain but i am Newbie!!!

My husband works for british gas and I have contacted HMRC who say he is eligible for a tax rebate. I understand that I need to claim for each years (past 4 years) but dont understand the % everyone is talking about?

short answer : its the highest tax rate you pay

    long answer:
it costs £x to launder the uniform every week/month/year
that cost is paid from your wages after you have had tax deducted from those wages, so not only does it cost you money to launder the uniform but you have also had to pay tax on the money you have now spent on that laundry cost

the Govt (aka us taxpayers) are not in the business of providing you with free laundry so will not refund you the cost you actually paid. However, it will refund the tax you had deducted from your wages so that you are not paying tax on money you never actually get to freely choose how to spend since you are "forced" to spend money on work related expenses, ie washing your uniform

for the sake of simplicity £x is defined as a range of specific amounts depending on the job you do. If the job is not specifically listed £x is the default rate of £60, ie HMRC consider that you spend £60 per year in total on washing the uniform

assuming you earn enough to pay tax in the first place (ie get more than £10k pa) your tax rate is 20%. If you earn more than £41,865 pa your tax rate is 40% (we won't bother with the 45% rate as people on that rate can work it out for themselves )

    therefore :
    20% taxpayer gets £60 x20% = £12 refund
    40% gets £24 refund

"normally" the principle is that you must be an employee (or self employed) in order to claim "FRE" ie flat rate expenses (the technical term for uniform laundry costs).

BUT I am not sure about your situation so best ask HMRC directly (and hope you get someone a bit better informed than the usual telephone monkey)
  • We not only wash our own uniforms we have to pay for them too. Each month they take money from our salary to pay for them. Can we claim for that as well or is that automatic?
  • Am I able to claim for uniform that I wore at a previous job? It is still within the 4 year limit but I am no longer working for the company.
  • Give them a ring its a freephone number unless you use a mobile. you can call them on 0300 200 3300

Thanks for all the help and advice on this thread... I also just called them up and they applied rebate to the last three years I worked for NHS. Like the others my cheque took about 2 weeks to come through

For some reason, my OH doesn't believe it's possible to claim a rebate on costs of washing his Sainsbury's (logoed) uniform, even after looking at the relevant section on HMRC's website. He says they require receipts as proof. Could anyone please tell me if this is the case, as from what I've read, this just isn't the case.

    TIA
