I made a call to HMRC following the advice on this thread and have this morning received a lovely refund for £404.10!
I called them last Thursday and was on hold for 30minutes but then it only took a few minutes to give them my information.
I am ecstatic! So thank you for the information, I will be telling my colleagues to do the same.:money:0 -
I have just filled in past 4 years form for basic amount can someone tell me is it £60 pre year (4x60 =£240) or £60 for all 4year thanks0

Apologies if this is all answered already, but 103 pages is rather a lot to get through! I'm finally getting round to claiming a tax rebate, after meaning to for ages! As a nurse I gather I should be able claim for uniform, the NMC, & Unison.
I've filled in a P87 form for each year back to 2010-11.
Are they best sent together in one envelope, or separately? The HMRC says not to put anything else in with the form, yet there's some talk of a covering letter.
As it's close to April 5th, I realise I'm cutting it rather fine for year 2010-11. Do HMRC accept a claim from the date received, or when it's processed?
Alternatively, I guess it might be safest to try & phone. However, as I haven't claimed before, I understand this shouldn't be possible.
Cheers,

I was given a "commemorative" jacket from my work, with company logo on the sleeve. I wear this to work every day, but am not "required" to do so. My company would not object if I wore a normal jacket.
Can I claim for laundering this?0 -

the rule is very clear, you MUST be required to wear a uniform in order to be able to claim. Your personal choice of wearing a piece of apparel which just so happens to have a logo is no more relevant than an accountant choosing to wear a suit because it reinforces a professional image. Neither your jacket nor the accountant's suit are a required corporate uniform.

Hi just wondered if any one as an agency worker has had success in getting tax back on washing clothing. As a forklift truck driver / warehouse man iv'e been an agency worker for the past 10 years doing long and short term contracts for various company's hence i do not have a uniform with a company logo but I do have dedicated work wear that most company's expect you to wear IE black or navy Regata style work trousers and a black or navy plain tee shirts. Obviously due to the nature of the work I have also had to supply my own steal toe capped work boots and hi vizibility jackets. Any info would be appreciated regards nick0

no logo = not a uniform
"black or navy plain work wear" is precisely the same as the example given by HMRC defining when a corporate expectation of how you dress does not make it into a "uniform" even if you consider it to be "dedicated workwear"

steel toe cap boots are classed as personal protective equipment and it is reasonable in your line of work that you would be required to wear them. Therefore you can claim the purchase cost of the boots if you paid for them yourself. Same applies to the high visibility jacket, that counts as PPE.

You can claim for the washing of your PPE, although if all it consists of is a jacket good luck trying to get the default £60 allowance for one item.
do remember what you get paid back is the tax you paid on the amount you have spent, not the amount itself. If the boots cost £30 you will get back £6 (ie 20%) as a one off payment.
to claim either phone HMRC or send a letter0 -
I have received a letter saying i'm not due a tax refund because i have had tax relief in my tax code.
How can i check this is correct??0 -
All my self-employed friends have their business name either printed or embroidered on to their workwear in order to be able to comply with the rules about washing your own workwear.
The font size and colour is irrelevent (it could be just one shade different to the garment colour and in 4-point lettering).Never Knowingly Understood.

Hello I just wanted to thank Martin, after reading the advice I applied for uniform tax refund for the last three years of which I received £180 plus my tax code has been adjusted, but not only that I received another £300 for a tax overpayment I had made but was unaware of it, so once again thank you. My next step is the council tax banding.0
