    Uniform Washer
It does as I have a focus that only is £20 a year to tax :) though the tax refund I mentioned above does actually pay for my insurance and servicing and a couple of tanks of fuel :)

  • Hi, does anyone know if this applies to Special Constables?
We wear the same uniform as our regular colleagues and incur the same laundry costs as a result.

    Thanks.

there is a special rule for specials and you are not going to like it!

You don't get paid to be a special so you don't pay tax in that job, so you can't reclaim tax for your laundry cost as there is no tax from which to refund you.
sorry, isn't fair given you do what you do, but there you go, that's tax

    Hi

Which is better to change your tax code or receive the amount as a cheque for the second year or working and cleaning your uniform at home? As i'm sure i read someone say that a cheque is best because it is cheaper for the hmrc to simply change your tax code but i'm unsure if that is true and how exactly i can work it out for myself to check whether it is true or not.

It's always better to get a cheque because you get the money quicker rather than spread out over the next tax year. Also if you take the tax code adjustment and you stop paying tax in the current year you may not get the tax back at all.

HMRC really don't like issuing cheques and unless you ask they'll always adjust your tax code. I believe it's also easier for the advisor to change your code than issue a cheque so it's pretty common for them to just change your tax code anyway even if you ask for the cheque.

For a tax rebate for uniform washing HMRC will either issue a cheque (if asked) or adjust the tax code to give the rebate.

For 2nd and subsequent years it is always handled by a change in the tax code which would be done at the time of applying and would stay in place each tax year until you inform them otherwise.
