ETA:- Hubby has just said that he tried to apply before and the list of questions was endless and he gave up in the end, more hassle than it's worth apparently :(
well if you read post number 1 and the MSE guide that is linked from it you will see it is very easy.

all you need do is fill out the template letter at post 1. You may if you wish add extra detail to this, for example, describing in more detail the nature of his uniform such as a) emphasising it has a company logo on it and b) he is required to launder it himself

you claim £60 per tax year from the later of a)when he started this job or b) the maximum time you can go back which is 4 tax years ie from April 2009

note he will get the tax on £60, ie £12, he will not get £60. This may come as a lump sum adjustment to his current years' tax code rather than as a cheque

No need to try and be a clever !!!!!!. I was only posting as it was a new thing for me and had never heard of it.
well there are over 1800 posts all about it not to mention the MSE guide so your question was rather open given that a bit of reading would have answered it for you. We have no problem with helping people who are prepared to help themselves

    Courier (contract) driver, not multi-drop.

So definitely PAYE (master and servant) not self employed ?

Normally the master supplies or reimburses his servant for the costs of doing the job, and then claims relief on his firm's tax return.

Here is the list of employees and their normal expense allowances. It shows those who get a bigger than standard allowance and, more importantly. those who get the standard £60 tax free addition to their personal allowance etc.

Bus driver is a standard £60 and the nearest to your husband I can find in the list.

don't forget the allowance is not restricted to only those on "the" list - the test is whether it is a uniform (or PPE) in which case the default of £60 applies irrespective of whether the industry appears on the list. So no need to "force fit" a courier to bus driver to justify claiming providing, as you so rightly query in this case, the claimant is an employee rather than self employed

Well i'm happy, just received notification that the Revenue are giving me a flat rate £120 for washing my uniform. But also they are giving me a tax refund as I have paid to much tax, so have a cheque in the post for £511.52 :)

Well pleased with MSE and the advice given - cheers!

I sent off a letter last week to try and claim this. I've just come to the realisation that I don't think I put my NI number or tax code on there. That was a bit stupid of me :( Do you think they'll be able to work it out from my name (fairly unusual), address and work place?

Would you still be eligible for this if your employer provides you with just a coat with their logo on? The rest is just plain clothing.

the quantity of clothing making up your "uniform" is not relevant
what matters is that your employer requires you to wash it yourself and does not provide any facilities at work for you to do such washing so you have to wash it yourself at your own expense

that said what do you mean by a coat?
    - lab coat?
    - waiters coat?
    - foul weather coat?
    - school crossing patrol coat?

    Uniform Washer
I just wrote a simple letter explaining my job role, what sector I worked in, and that my company requires me to wear a uniform with a logo on, mostly that is just shirts and a fleece.

They tell me that I am entitled to a flat rate of £120 a year for this, it's not a fortune but it pays for my car tax each year, so one thing less to find the money for :)

Either your pay a very small amount of car tax or you have misunderstood - I suspect the latter.

Your flat rate of £120 is an allowance. You will therefore pay less tax amounting to 20% of this allowance which is £24. I doubt that £24 will pay your car tax.
