I'm typing up a claim for my OH just now, but I am a bit confused. He is a mechanic, so can he claim more than the standard £65? This link

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm

    says £120?

Also, should he actually get a rebate of £120 / £65 or is it 20% of that (as a basic rate tax payer)?

    thanks! :j
you are indeed confused, there is no such thing as a £65 standard rate, it's £60. As stated numerous times it's the tax on the allowance you get back

either he is a motor mechanic working in a garage or he isn't, if he is then claim appropriately

He is a motor mechanic working in a garage. So his allowance is £120?

Yes it is. This will give him tax relief of £24pa.
  • I have sat and read loads of posts and some contridict eachother. So can someone answer this one please.
The wife is a Vet nurse and launders her uniform and has for 10+years. She is part time and works 4-5 day weeks. 20-30 hours variable.

    Can i claim for it?
How many years 4 or 6?
    For £60 a year?
Do i just write a letter or do i need to include forms?

    Thanks in advance

posts have only partially been updated, the limit is now 4 years ie from 2009/10 tax year (inclusive) onwards
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/how-to-get.htm

veterinary services do not fall into a specific industry category as they are not counted as healthcare so the claim is £60 per year - assuming she can legitimately state that her clothing is either a logo'd uniform or (more likely) that it is personal protective equipment (eg overalls/ lab coat etc) in which latter case it does not necessarily have to have a logo

the fact she is part time is irrelevant

you write a letter - use the template such as shown in post #1 if you want
  • Thanks for the reply. Thats what i thought. £60 for 4 years and i have written the letter out already but need to fill in the above.
Should i charge her commission lol?
  • This is interesting, as hubby has to wash his uniform at home (correction I do!).

The uniform has been supplied and the t-shirt/sweatshirt has the company logo on it.

I didn't know you could apply for this, do you think it's worth me doing?

 no, it would be a complete waste of your time and would deplete the nation's tax income pool at a time when we need as much tax as we can get

Yes, that is the whole purpose of this thread.
It is a fairly minimal amount of tax saving but better in your husband's pocket.

    What is his trade?

No need to try and be a clever !!!!!!. I was only posting as it was a new thing for me and had never heard of it.

    Courier (contract) driver, not multi-drop.

ETA:- Hubby has just said that he tried to apply before and the list of questions was endless and he gave up in the end, more hassle than it's worth apparently :(
