By UTax do you mean Uniform Washing Tax Rebate?
and for the £11 they are taking over £70 in agent fees. The reasoning they say is because they are getting her back £395 and won't listen that the £395 is for a tax rebate.

The £11 and £395 are both tax rebates.
e: she went through u-tax.co.uk she thinks but she was never given any T&C's to say she was having all these fees taken. Surely not providing T&C's stating their fees is illegal?

That was her mistake. She should have contacted HMRC directly and all it would have cost is the price of a stamp or a phone call.

U-Tax are an agency and you have to pay them a fixed fee or a percentage of the total rebate that they apply for on your behalf. Their T&C are clearly laid out in the website so I don't think you will get anywhere.

Your girlfriend should make sure she contacts HMRC and asks for U-Tax to be removed as her agent from now on. If she is ever entitled to another rebate. it would go via U-Tax even if your girlfriend did go through HMRC.

There T&C's are clearly on their website, yes. They weren't with the form when she was applying though.

She never asked them to apply for her tax rebate. She applied for her work clothes rebate and they took it upon themselves to also apply for her rebate. She also spoke to HMRC who never mentioned them at all. Instead they said they were sending the cheque to her only to find out 3 weeks later they were sending it to that [TEXT DELETED BY FORUM TEAM] website.

Whether she would have obtained the £300 rebate without U-Tax's assistance is up for debate. I would say probably not.

It's in the T&C's but it's not clear at all I'd be interested if anyone has a view on whether this is adequately disclosed or not. Did the claimant come in through the website or other means? ie a telephone call or a flyer.

Also worth noting U-Tax have a hefty £35+VAT minimum fee so you'd have to get a rebate of over £40 before you got anything to keep yourself. I wonder if this was was disclosed in any contact she had with them?

Posted my letter for repayment as a cheque for cleaning uniform on 22/07/2013
Received a cheque today for £12.11 and also a letter changing my tax code for this year. Yay :)
    eBay 100 item challenge- 16/100 => £268.95

    SW Start date (16/08/13) @ 134.4 lbs & BMI = 25.4
    Goal weight of 126lbs

  • I keep meaning to look into this - I work as a Home Carer (via an agency for a Local Authority) and my tunic has a company logo on it. Would that be comparable to a Healthcare Assistant on the HMRC list?
I previously worked for a company and had a generic non logo'd tunic (navy tunic with white piping - would never wear it elsewhere, wasn't exactly fashionable!) - am I right in thinking it's only uniforms with a logo that count?

Yes you are right, MSE link explains that its still worth a try for uniforms w/o logos plus you can claim back up to 4 years so all you can do is try.

Yes I've been the same putting it off this is the first time i've ever applied for tax rebate from the hmrc for anything. Just write a letter as including all the info as explained & suggested in this threads guide and post to hmrc. :)

    Hi,

I received this letter today. Does this mean I will receive the full amount of £140 for the past four years and they will change my tax code this year which technically means I will gain the £565 this year by not paying that much text?

Does it matter that we are nearly half way through the text year?

Will I get a different tax code next year?

    Thanks :)

HMRC don’t pay your expenses, they allow tax relief on them. You are entitled to a tax allowance of £140 each year and the tax on that is 140 @ 20% = £28.

The calculation on page 2 of shows how much HMRC owe you for each year plus a tiny amount of interest but it is cheaper for them to change your code for the current year than pay you by cheque.

So they owe you £112.94 for earlier years and, roughly speaking, you will get back a bit less than half of that in your next pay packet, so about £50. On top of that you will get roughly a bit less than half of this year’s entitlement of £28, so another £12.

You will get back the rest evenly over the remainder of the tax year.
  • Hi Folks,

I came across this tax rebate on facebook and thought id do a bit of reserach which to my delight MSE came up as part of my reserach.

Anyway my husnband is in the process of writting a letter as he has been working for the past six years and is obliged to wear a uniform.

I would be greatful if u could help us with a few questions.

first in the sample letter u mention "Details available from" I have no idea what to put there!

    the letter mentions "
I therefore wish to claim anexpenses allowance of £xx for each year " how do I know what figure to put for each year?

finally my husband worked there for a couple of years full time, but now only does one day a week as he has another full time job. hence his tax code curently is different to the first coulple of years.

which tax code should we use?

    Thanks guys

    Serah
