I got my letter back today. They have said they agree flat rate expenses if £60 are agreed for last 4 tax years. Then they say they have amended my tax code for current year.

Then that my refund will be paid to me via my tax code every pay day valid for 1 year only, however this will be paid to a 2nd company I work for. A 2nd company that I won't be working for this year. So I will miss out.

I did state on my letter to send me a cheque. I have been trying to ring them all day, just to be on hold for 20 mins at a time!!!

Why are they not sending cheques as requested?

After some advice on the Uniform rebate...

My wife applied using the template letter and got a reply saying that they would refund through the next payslip.

The tax code also changed to include an allowance for the uniform.

But the problem is that my wife is not a tax payer, i.e. only works part-time and does not earn enough to pay tax.

Therefore the allowance is not being of any benefit as the wage is not enough to earn tax.

I did say in the template to send the rebate as a cheque, but they have ignored this fact and just bolted it onto the tax code, which in this case is unfair.

    Any advice please?

What did you do regarding this? Same has happened to me, I stated on the letter I wanted a cheque. They have said they will pay me back through my 2nd job, however I won't earn hardly anything from there :/

I've ended up loosing money, but I'd like if anything to get this company brought down.
since you never had the money in the first place you have not LOST it , you are blinded by £ signs

you appointed a company to act for you rather than DIY and you are now finding out that one of the problems in not understanding what you were doing is you don't understand what the relationship is between you and that company
go and read the small print on whatever it is that you signed when you asked them to make the claim on your behalf

    1. write to HMRC and instruct HMRC that you are cancelling any mandate HMRC may have in place authorising HMRC to deal with company X as your agent. HMRC should in future deal direct with you and should have no further contact with company X. If you do not do this then company X will continue to receive "your" tax rebate forever more

    2. depending on the terms of the contract you signed with company X you will have to sue them for the money you believe is yours. Note carefully - HMRC have no responsibility in this, HMRC followed "your" instructions telling HMRC to deal with company X not to deal direct with you (if you read the contract you agreed to you will find you have appointed X as your authorised agent, HMRC will therefore deal with the agent not you)

Except they've paid tax they didn't need to, and now can't get it back. So they have lost it.

I disagree. If Axiom Tax have failed to pay the funds you were contractually entitled to a criminal act has occurred.

Normally this wouldn't be the case but I note that they have closed their website and their Facebook page so it appears they may no longer be contactable. Have you had any correspondence with them at all?

I suggest you call HMRC and ask for details of what the amount was and who it was paid to. If the amount has not been cashed it may be possible for them to re-issue you with a cheque.

If the funds have been cashed ask for the details of the payment and the procedure in reporting a fraud.
  • Hi, sorry to be a bit dim but I've been looking and cannot determine whether the rates are old or new

My husband is a service engineer and has had to wash his own logo'd workwear (so t-shirts, jumpers and fleeces, everything apart from the overalls) for just over 7 years with no knowledge of this rebate. Is it just a case of contacting HMRC and seeing what they say? Or is there further information required beforehand?

I'm confused as the rates show he is entitled to £140 per year from 2008, another figure before - do they really pay out this type of money? I ask as the figures I see people are receiving are very different and I'm trying to gather if I've completely missed something when working it out :/ (probably, knowing me I have. Lol!)

  • Hello,
I'm just looking into claiming for my partner (he's a farm worker) and has to supply all his own clothes and they need washing daily, due to the outdoors and mucky nature of his job. My questions are, A.how far back can we claim? B. is there a template letter? C. How do I know how much to claim for? D. Will it have much effect on his tax at the moment?

Sorry for all of the questions!
    Many thanks,
    Jannine xx

    A. Maximum is this tax year and the 4 previous ones
    B. No idea
    C. You can't claim as he doesn't appear to have a uniform, laundry of normal clothing can't be claimed for.
    D. Zero - see above

He might be able to claim a flat rate expense though as an Agricultural worker - see HMRC info here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm

If he hasn't already claimed this he could possibly get £19 back each year assuming he's a basic rate taxpayer (£100 x 20% = £20 less a pound or so people on PAYE usually owe each year due to how PAYe system works).
  • His uniform consists of shirt, trousers, overalls, work boots and wellies!

I doubt he'd been seen wearing these out and about besides work!
