RE: Expenses Allowance
I have been employed at Company Name, Location since (Date of Starting at Employment). I am obliged to launder the uniform, which is supplied to me by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £xx for each year since the above date.

There seems to be a double-standard going on with this tax rebate.
For example it would appear that the Police can get it but supermarket workers who earn a few pence per hour more than National Minimum Wage cannot get it! At that level of pay hiring a Chartered Accountant is quite out of the question.
The actual case is that of a friend who always seems to be short of money. Anyhow he has now received a snotty letter from the tax office that states that he is NOT ENTITLED to any tax rebate! His money shortage is mainly due to having to pay Council Tax on his corrugated iron hut in Cornwall where there is no work and rent in South Wales where there is work.
One can surmise that when the prospect of having to pay a tax refund arises they "make a mistake" accidentally on on purpose.
Hearsay evidence does in fact bear this out. For instance a little bird told me about shenanigans at Worcester Tax Office several decades ago. Allegedly a new boss arrived and asked "Who has got too much work?" Everybody claimed that they had. The boss then arranged for the cleaners to fetch a tarpaulin and all the clerks cleared their desks onto it so that they could start afresh. The papers were then burnt so if people wanted tax rebates they would have to apply again! This information was allegedly leaked by someone who worked there.
Third world country? I couldn't possibly comment.0 -
After some advice on the Uniform rebate...
My wife applied using the template letter and got a reply saying that they would refund through the next payslip.
The tax code also changed to include an allowance for the uniform.
But the problem is that my wife is not a tax payer, i.e. only works part-time and does not earn enough to pay tax.
Therefore the allowance is not being of any benefit as the wage is not enough to earn tax.
I did say in the template to send the rebate as a cheque, but they have ignored this fact and just bolted it onto the tax code, which in this case is unfair.
Any advice please?0 -

It is a tax relief not a payment.
You may only get a payment for claims of previous years, but only if you have paid more that the claimed amount in tax.
Of course if she only works part time then she doesn't need to launder as often as a full time employee thus trying to claim a flat rate might be seen as rather cheeky.0 -
My most recent job means wearing a branded jacket and some other company supplied PPE. I am mainly office and site based but decided to try for this tax refund.
I didnt send a letter, I phoned the tax office last week. I was told my allowance was £60 and then they have backdated this for to 2010/11, 2011/12.
A cheque arrived yesterday for £26.32
I was told I will receive another cheque for 2012/13 once my details have been submitted for this year and my coding changed going forward.
It may not be a big amount but it's better in my pocket than theirs and was very easy to organise.
Happy! :j£2014 in 2014£3,155.66 £20140 -
Although I can technically wear bits and pieces of my uniform outside of work (work in a retail clothes store) I decided to be cheeky and give it a go anyway.
Got my tax code changed to allow an extra £120 per year plus a check backdated for the last two years...if only I had found out sooner!!!! :j0 -
Do they contact your employer to check whether your claim is legitimate in terms of wearing a uniform?0

one of our employees has just had his tax code changed for this sort of allowance, there was no contact received from HMRC to query anything with us.0 -

"Will I be found out if to lie to HMRC?"
Answer:
maybe or maybe not0 -
I mentioned this at work today, charity minibus outfit, run from the chairmans home, and they said that there is washing facilities onsite. Its HIS washing machine in HIS house! Now does this consitute available facilities, as i feel that he might be a bit peeved if i turned up at 11 at night to do the washing! The main point is that despite having worked there for four years, this is the first we have heard of it.
Any comments?
Or are are we all stymied by this for a claim and change of tax code?0
