  • Hi im new tothe site so I apologise for any errors. I am a police officer and have been for nearly 7 years. I recently wrote to the tax office about claiming refund on my uniform for the past 5 years and I have today recieved a letter telling me my tax cide is correct and I am not owed anything. Police officers are on the list for the higher rate and it says is only armed forces that have the correct tax code so they dont need to claim. I have never hadanything to say my code has changed and I am just wondering how or if I can check if this is right. As I do feel we should be entitled to claim and everything on the net seems to say tax codes arent changed until someone claims?????
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
  • Yes and make sure that you do not miss out your chance toclaim for uniform tax rebate. I did it and I received £641 tax rebate.

either your tax code is currently 810 or its isn't
if not you will have to disclose what it is if you expect further help as we cannot read the letter from here

    What constabulary are you with?

Certain ones are not entitled to it as they receive the additional income through net pay agreements.

What should you do if you have the extra tax allowance for washing the uniform at home then lose the job?
  • Thank you for the advice re claiming laundry charges. I have now received a cheque from HMR&C and have had my tax coding changed.:j

I am self employed and hv sent a letter to tax office with regards to claiming for washing my uniform at home, they hv sent a letter bk saying how much do I want to claim for and which box do I want adjusted on my tax return, can someone help pls xx:

This thread is all about employees who are claiming in respect of the laundry costs relating to their employment. It seems like you are trying to claim in connection with your business so the information on these pages doesn't apply to you.

If you have completed tax returns then you need to make it clear which part of your tax return you now want to alter - this will be what they are asking you.

What you can/can't claim could be totally different to anything posted on here
  • Hey, just wanted to let people know I just got a letter back from HMRC (I sent my letter 23rd February), they've sent me a cheque for £142.06 to cover tax on laundry expenses from 2006 to 2010. They said it's too late to claim for tax year 2007-08 so mine apparently covers 2008-11.

Ooh, got my PAYE coding notice and they've automatically given me the £120 allowance this year after getting five years worth back in January (2008, 09, 10, 11, 12) - result!
