I'm in exactly the same position. I wrote to the tax office 2 weeks ago claiming uniform and professional fees for the past 4 years. I received a new tax code notification for the new financial year in the post today. I'm wondering if that's it and I don't get a rebate?0 -
AbbieCadabra wrote: »Has something changed with this allowance for 2013/14? An employee has received a new tax code for 2013/14 & he's been given an additional £165 allowance for flat rate job expenses. He's been on the basic tax code for years, circumstances not changed, doesn't complete a self assessment form & hasn't made a claim for anything with HMRC. We don't supply him with a uniform eiether, so i'm a little confused!AbbieCadabra wrote: »He's a joiner, small private limited company. Could it be something to do with tools? All employees have some of their own tools that they purchase (not frequently) & they will take these with them if they leave. Still doesn't explain where this has come from if he's had no contact with HMRC. Seems odd for them to be doing this without being asked.
I've already advised him to query this new code as he doesn't want to leave it in case it's wrong & he ends up owing them money.
Edit - just looked at the list & found this:
Seamen Carpenters. a. Passenger liners. £165
We have nothing to do with boats/liners, bizarre! As he is a joiner, he is entitled to claim allowances of £140 per year (see “wood and furniture” in the link I gave above) and can claim for the last 4 years.
Not exactly life changing money but better in his pocket than HMRc’s.
In many ways it doesn’t really matter that HMRC seem to have given him a spurious allowance. It has created an opportunity for him to claim what he is entitled to.
At the same time you, as a caring employer, may want to consider advising your other tradesmen employees of opportunities that they may have missed.AbbieCadabra wrote: »yes, will definitely be letting the others know. until this, i had no idea these type of allowances even existed, which is what HMRC bank on i suppose.
thanks
quoted previous info to keep in context -
something a bit odd going on at HMRC, the employee that had received a new tax code rang them & was advised - this is an allowance that all construction workers are given & you've had this allowance for years anyway.
erm, no he hasn't as he's just been on the basic tax code for years (no new codes from HMRC received by him or us until now). our other employees have received NO notification of any new tax code, so it's not something that's been done automatically (as inferred in the call with HMRC).
also the amount is wrong, as quoted in previous info, it should be £140 not £165 per year.
so, HMRC have basically fobbed him off & he thinks he can't claim back for 4 years now!
i've told him he's been advised incorrectly & if it were me, i'd just write to the tax office to make a claim. as his employer, there's nothing else that i can do really.0 -

I dont think you need to do either - that is basically what you will be entitled to in full. You can only claim for 4 previous years and this normally works out to be £11 or £12 per year tax refund so the £50 will be the refund for these 4 years plus you should get the extra allowance in your code for this year onwards
What exactly have you received - if you have got new tax codes what exactly do they show and for which tax years are they for?
Did you specifically ask for a refund by cheque or did you simplysay you were entitled to tax back due to the laundry costs?0 -

If you only asked for tax relief on the laundry costs then you wont get a cheque you will get the money back via a better tax code which means you pay less tax through your wages.
What exactly did you say in your letter to tax office and what does your new tax code show - near the top it has lists of allowances and deductions - what is on your code?0 -
In my original letter to the Tax Office I requested that a rebate be paid to me by cheque. I have since received new tax coding for the year 6th April 2013 to 5th April 2014 which includes £60 (I misread this at first to read £50) tax relief due for the expense that I am likely to have to pay out whilst doing my job. For example this could include laundry costs of uniforms or protective clothing. It does not mention that this is for previous years. I have checked previous years tax coding letters none of which make this provision.0

That puts a different slant on things, if the code only includes your tax allowance and the £60 then I think you can also expect a new code for this tax year and, assuming you paid some tax, calculations for the previous 4 years. All things being equal you could get a cheque for about £45 and pay less tax via your wages from now on.0 -
Sorry have read some of this thread but not quite sure if I'm able to claim... I have work equipment, PPE, warm jackets etc with logos that I launder but dont wear daily, just when required.
