  • Wanted to share my success story - I wrote off at the start of January to claim uniform tax rebate (although I no longer wear a uniform to work, and wish I'd claimed earlier!!) and today received a cheque for £266.64. Well pleased with that!
  • Hi,
I'm looking to reclaim tax for my uniform and was just wondering if HMRC will notify your work if you're planning to reclaim.

Sorry if thats a silly question....just wondering. :)
  • They wouldn't tell anyone if you're "planning" to claim, how would they even know?

But if you do make a successful claim then you would normally get a new tax code number which would have to be sent to your employer. You get details of how the code is calculated but your employer just gets the actual number so they might be told your code is now 753L instead of 747L but not specifically why it has changed.
  • I've searched the guides and forum but don't seem to be able to find the answer to my question re. washing uniform at home.

My daughter is planning to reclaim the tax allowance for the last 4 years but during this time she has had 2 jobs, one full-time and one part-time in the evenings with a different employer. Both require her to wear a recognisable uniform. Her 2nd (part-time) job has until now been taxed on BR code. (Next year, from April '13, the tax office have said they will split/amalgamate her codings/allowances).

What we wondered is - can she claim for both jobs? Obviously she has 2 separate employers and uniforms which both need washing daily.

Also, she changed employer back in September and now works for a national (Scottish) charity. She is required to wear a uniform exactly like a police uniform from head to toe (the only difference is in the logo). Is this still counted at the default rate of £60/£12?

    Any help would be appreciated!

yes - this is one of the many failings in the "guide" on which it fails to provide guidance

the pseudo police uniform is just that, pseudo, therefore it is not on the list is it? So you have the answer!
BTW I assume she will not get arrested for impersonation if the charity(?) uniform is as close a match as you imply.

Thank you - that's good news for her! I presume that it can all be set out in one letter, giving her employment & uniform details for each job and tax year? Something like:

"I was employed at ... from ... and obliged to launder the uniform supplied by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expense allowance of £60 for each year since the above date.

    IN ADDITION TO THIS CLAIM

I have also had a second job and been employed at ....since....etc"

Regarding the 'pseudo' police uniform - yes, I guessed that really but thought I'd double check with someone more knowledgeable. In hindsight, it's not an exact match, and it doesn't come with the 'cuffs etc - wouldn't be much use restraining the animals she deals with!!
  • First post!
I followed up Martin's tip about applying for uniform tax rebate, and sent the Tax Office a letter 3 weeks ago.
I got a letter back today confirming that they've changed my tax code to 816L as of April 2013 and therefore have an extra £60 allowance next year.
Thing is, where's my cheque?? ;)
Have all you other successful applicants recieved a letter like mine and then a cheque at a later date? By changing my tax code they are agreeing that I am entitled to tax relief for laundry duties so I should therefore be entitled to a backdated refund.
I've worked in a laboratory for 17 years and wear a long white lab coat, so I asked them for a cheque backdated for as long as applicable.
  • Hubby and I tried a uniform rebate claim, hubby is full time in uniform, my 2nd job has uniform.
Pretty sure we did it correctly, hubby got back £33.49. It had my tax code revaluated and discovered I had underpaid £99.98 in tax.

My tax code for 2013/14 is being changed to sort out underpayment hoever I leave this 2nd job in 4 weeks and then go on maternity leave in June. Is there anything I can do? Will repayment affect maternity pay? (Doubt it but thought I'd ask)

Ps. Should say my 2nd job was 1 day a week since Aug 2010. Husband has been full time with this company since 2006.

I have the same question as boldboy, letter recieved from the taxman dated 21st Feb 2013 indicating tax allowance increase of £60 for "Flat rate job expenses"; year ending 5th April 2013, but no mention of the rebate cheque i'd requested for previous years.

Does the rebate cheque come later, or should i contact HMRC again?

I should have posted an update at the weekend, but I was too busy.
A cheque arrived the following day refunding me for the current tax year.
There was a second letter too which outlined the amount I have overpaid for the previous 3 years, but no cheque to refund this money.
Still no cheque today, so I phoned the number on the letter and followed the automated system to the correct pre-recorded snippet about 'having received confirmation of an overpayment' or words to that effect.
The message stated that refund cheques are issued within 4 weeks of you receiving confirmation paperwork, and not to contact HMRC to chase up the refund until this time has passed.
So it's sit and wait time. Which is fine by me, I'm happy that they're actually going to pay out!
Should be around £100 all in.
