if your tax code is not 810 (ie the standard personal allowannce for 12/13) then something has been adjusted. Ifs its more than 810 you are getting a rebate for something, if less than 810 you are being taxed extra for some sort of benefit in kind that you get

    my tax code says 822L/0

I guess that means that I am getting this rebate already then?

edited to add...after googling, I found a royal mail forum that confirms this. Thank you for the help though

Sorry this is a little bit off topic, but does anyone else find themselves getting annoyed with the various uniform tax rebate companies appearing in their news feeds on Facebook? I have FB friends that like these sponsored pages and then it keeps reappearing even though I have reported the advert to Facebook. I get really annoyed that a company charges you for something you can do yourself for the price of a stamp. Every time I comment that you can do it for free and post the MSE uniform tax rebate link, it normally gets removed ASAP! Hopefully at least one person follows the link and doesn't get ripped off. It makes me angry that a company makes money from something so simple grrr!
  • Quick Q, I wrote to HMRC about this before Christmas and got a letter last week confirming the refund dated back to 2008; this has changed my tax code to repay it over the year...

My question is, what happens with regard to the money being paid back? Obviously it comes via payroll, but with there being only 3 months left this tax year, will I only receive 3/12 of the repayment and have to reclaim the rest from HMRC? The amount was (120*5)*20%, so £120, £10 per month.

    Thanks in advance...

Once claimed for this, do you have to claim for each year after? or do they automatically take it into account?
My tax code is 322 after a company car, so how can i work out if i have the allowance or not?

    Hi all.
I have been in my current job two years so will try to claim for this but in my previous job I had to wear overalls.
How would I claim for both? Do I have to put two different claims in?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Edit:
I'm not sure what categories my jobs would fall under. My current job is mainly as a security guard but also maintenance really. My old job was a cable puller so possibly come under labourer. Any thoughts on this?

One letter, just explain about 2 jobs giving the details for each as shown in the guide

If you are not one of the specific jobs on the list and they were just “overalls”, then they are not a uniform and not allowed. If on the other hand the overalls had a company name logo then they are a uniform and are allowed, but as stated in the other HMRC threads I‘ve previously linked to, it’s the default £60 allowance.

    Thanks for that.
I think the overalls did have a logo but I know for certain that you were not allowed on site without them, very strict MOD run site.

    Hi there,

Posting on behalf of my wife.

My wife claimed for the uniform FRE allowance for the current and previous tax year. Her tax codes were 747L last year and 810L this year.

Today she received a reply from HMRC stating "I confirm you have already received tax relief on flat rate expenses through your tax code for the tax years 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2012-13. So, you have paid the right amount of tax and we do not owe you any tax back."

Now, seeing as her tax codes have not been adjusted from the "normal/default" one - I assume this letter is wrong. (We also don't know why they mention tax releif going back to 2008 as she wasn't in uniform until 2011-12 (which is where we claimed FROM).

So, how do we go about getting HMRC to correct this.

I know that the unfiorm is allowed as most other people at the work have successfully adjusted their tax codes.

    Any help much appreciated!

...as RM is not specifcially listed on the HMRC list 3 and given 120 is twice the standard 60- rate i'd be very interested to know what your RM website says is the rate for postal staff

Going back more years than I care to admit to local Tax Offices in every major town and city dealt with the PAYE of their respective GPO branches and postmen were included in the then equivalent of HMRC’s “agreed list”.

Nowadays, probably as a result of centralisation at both RM and HMRC, it all seems to be dealt with by HMRC in 2 locations and there is no need for the rest of the HMRC network to have the details.

As I remember it, in the days of Tom Jackson postmen seemed to get a much better FRE allowance than most other uniformed people and that was probably down more to negotiating skills than anything else.

Overalls don’t need to be a uniform. Tax relief is available for special or protective clothing.

    A uniform is special clothing.

A tee-shirt with the employer’s logo on it is special clothing.

Overalls are far more likely to be protective clothing, a doctor’s white coat, a warehouseman’s brown coat and a hard hat on a building site are all protective clothing and don’t need logos, though I doubt that putting a hard hat in the washing machine would do it a lot of good.

Has something changed with this allowance for 2013/14? An employee has received a new tax code for 2013/14 & he's been given an additional £165 allowance for flat rate job expenses. He's been on the basic tax code for years, circumstances not changed, doesn't complete a self assessment form & hasn't made a claim for anything with HMRC. We don't supply him with a uniform eiether, so i'm a little confused!
