£165 is not a figure which appears on the HMRC Agreed List.

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm

As far as I know, nothing has changed lately. If it had you can be pretty sure there would be a few threads on here.

If you can say what his job is there could just be a clue there but barring that, he needs to ring HMRC and seek an explanation.

He's a joiner, small private limited company. Could it be something to do with tools? All employees have some of their own tools that they purchase (not frequently) & they will take these with them if they leave. Still doesn't explain where this has come from if he's had no contact with HMRC. Seems odd for them to be doing this without being asked.

I've already advised him to query this new code as he doesn't want to leave it in case it's wrong & he ends up owing them money.

Edit - just looked at the list & found this:
Seamen Carpenters. a. Passenger liners. £165

We have nothing to do with boats/liners, bizarre!

As he is a joiner, he is entitled to claim allowances of £140 per year (see “wood and furniture” in the link I gave above) and can claim for the last 4 years.

Not exactly life changing money but better in his pocket than HMRc’s.

In many ways it doesn’t really matter that HMRC seem to have given him a spurious allowance. It has created an opportunity for him to claim what he is entitled to.

At the same time you, as a caring employer, may want to consider advising your other tradesmen employees of opportunities that they may have missed.
  • yes, will definitely be letting the others know :). until this, i had no idea these type of allowances even existed, which is what HMRC bank on i suppose.

    thanks
  • There was a period in my life where I had many part time jobs and most of them I had to wear uniform. How far back can you claim for?

Any ideas at what amounts I could claim for based on the following?

2004 - 2008 - Car dealership receptionist - wore a logo top and black trousers
2006 - worked in a bar had to wear a t shirt with company logo
2006 - 2009 - worked as a waitress and had to wear apron, white shirt, black trousers and a tie specific to the company.
2008 - 2011 - worked in petrol station wearing a logo top and black trousers
2009 - present - working for a housing association. Site boots, company coat and hig vis vest

None of these offered facilities to wash your uniform. Thanks for any help in advance!

Just had a cheque for £45 from doing this. I work in retail and as there doesn't seem to be a dedicated category for retailing, chanced my arm and put down £60.

Seems to have worked anyway, got a cheque and my tax code is meant to have been altered. Result!

  • Just wanted to let you know, I have just recieved a cheque for £289!

I am a sales manager in car sales. I do not wear a 'uniform' as such, but I do wear a suit, shirt and tie and I do wear a name badge that has the company logo and my name which wears the garment.

I did have to reply to an extra letter stating the badge damaging the garment, the letter was very 'we will not pay you,' but recieved £289.

    Thanks you MSE!!!!
  • Does anyone know the amount that Cabin Crew can claim??

does anyone know which tax office i should send the letter too? I dont know which tax office my partners company uses that he works for now, hes only been there since october so it will prob be a case of just changing his tax code for this job, but im also trying to claim for his time whilst he was at his last company which he was made redundant from last april and i know they used LP Lothians tax office. Am i right to claim for both in the same letter?

I've checked my tax code which is 816L so think i have already been given the extra allowance.
