  • You sure youve not got your years mixed up?
816L looks like a revised code for this tax year and if would be very unusual to get a cheque during the year - the revised code for this year would normally mean a refund via lower tax through your wages.
Might be the cheque you got is for the 4 previous years you can claim for, this could be about £45 eg standard refund of £12/year less the few pence you normally owe for each year.
How much was the cheque you got?
  • You sure youve not got your years mixed up?

    Quite sure.
816L is a revised code which will come in to effect in April. My statement for 12/13 says I have overpaid by £44 and that is how much the cheque is for.
Previous years are for lower amounts, and I have to wait 4 weeks before chasing any cheques for those.
    £100ish all in.
  • Hi all! :)

I sent off a letter for myself (and my mother too actually) as we both work in Asda so therefore have uniforms.
Even though I wear high-vis ones being out on the road, I still had the standard £60.

Had the first letter through this morning saying my Tax Code changing from 810L to 816L to reflect the expenses, but similar to others - no cheque with it.
I'll give it 4 weeks from today before I get back in touch though.

In another question - forgive me if I'm answering myself or stating the obvious...
I'm on a merit/waiting list for a new job to start at some point in this year - no idea when yet though. When I do start elsewhere, will I need to contact HMRC saying I no longer need the extra allowance?
Or will that be automatic when the details go through from my old employer/new employer etc?
    Ta :)
  • I have been reading with interest the various posts with people successfully claiming back their tax. My partner wears a uniform and I sent a letter a few weeks ago to HMRC. He got a surprise tonight when he opened his wage slip tonight and it had an additional £120 in it (showing as a rebate). His tax code has now changed from 810L to 860L which I don't quite understand. We have had no letter of explanation from HMRC. I've skimmed through other posts but can't see a similar story and wondered why most people seem to be getting cheques and why his code has gone up so much? Thanks.
If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.;)

Still think you're confused, if the code is for next tax year (April 13 to April 14) why is it so low? Would normally be 944 + laundry allowance.

Also think you are gonna be waiting a long time for another cheque. £44 is about right for 4 years to April 12 and how could you get a cheque for this year anyhow, has your employer already given you your p60 which is needed to calculate the tax for this year??
If you look at your calculations you will probably find you are double counting everything
    year 1 = 11 total due back 11
    year 2= 11 plus 11 from year 1 = 22
    year 3 = 11 plus 22 at end of year 2 = 33
    year 4 = 11 plus 33 at end of year 3 = 44
total amount due back is 44

    are you counting 11+22+33+44=110?

Had 2 letters today from HMRC.

    One hand-signed confirming I an owed a mind-blowing £23.28 for 2010-onwards.

The other one with all the bumf explaining how and where it's come from etc.

Slightly disappointed with that. Ah well. At least I'll get taxed slightly less anyway.

    *edit*
Going by what I've read I suppose it's about right what I'm getting. I guess I seen people claiming loads and hoped for the best :rotfl:

I think I'll start washing my uniform in Asda Smart Price powder and let it blow dry from now on if that's it! :rotfl:

Just a quick reply to follow up from my post on the 27th.

I got 2 letters the following day, one informing me i was due a refund of £44.56 and the other detailing the "tax calculations".

On 1st March i received the cheque.

Also, i can confirm what Dazed and confused said is correct, the tax calculations were carried out precisely as he said.
To clarify what my letter informing me of a tax code change from 810L to 816L actually says, it says it is for year 6 April 2012 to 5 April 2013, i.e. the current tax year.

Some things have changed since then, an updated page is available on MSE but being a new user the forum software is blocking me from posting a direct link to the page. :(

That said, if you google "uniform tax rebate money saving expert" (without the quotes) you should find the page easily enough.
Fwiw, at time of posting it was the first link google returned and was last updated 1st September 2012.

It worked for me, good luck.
