I applied for this for the first time last year and was wondering if it will be automatically applied for the new tax year 2013-14 or if I need to apply again?0

I dunno but why is everyone writing to the tax office to claim this. I phoned my tax office and gave them all my information over the phone. They sent a letter confirming my new tax code a few weeks later. I found it very quick and easy doing it that way rather than writing to them.0

I work in marketing for an organisation, and although I wear standard office wear most of the time, I occasionally have to wear a promotional T-shirt with my company logo on.
I only use it for work, I wash it myself, no washing facilities are provided at work and it was provided by work - but I only wear it around once a month. I normally wear it with standard black trousers.
Is it still worth a punt?0 -

i printed out some guidance notes about these allowances from HMRC website yesterday for our employees & it specifically states
"The first time you ask for tax relief for your expenses you'll have to contact HMRC in writing."
but then goes on to say
"If you phone HMRC to ask for relief for your expenses they will only be able to give you tax relief if all of the following conditions are met:
your expenses are less than £1,000 (or £2,500 for professional fees and subscriptions)
you've claimed them in a previous tax year for the same employment
HMRC has accepted your earlier claim
you haven’t already been sent a P87 to complete
If you meet the conditions, HMRC will give you tax relief right away and repay any tax you've overpaid. Otherwise, you'll have to fill in form P87 before they can allow your claim."
somewhat confusing?! if it's a straightforward claim, hopefully they will deal with just from a phone call.0 -
Write a letter, post it, wait two weeks....
Result, cheque lands on the door mat to the tune of £190.84..
Funnily enough now all my work mates want a copy of my letter.!
Thanks MSE0 -
Ok, sorry for a stupid question but after reading this a few times im still confused as to when i can claim back to.
It says four year. Does that include this year (ie claim for 2009-2013) or four years back plus this year (ie 2008 - 2012 plus the current year 2013).
Any ideas?
Thanks, Mark0 -

If that was aimed at me then thank you, but I'm no clearer.
I know the tax year is April, but still don't know if its 4 years or 4 years plus the current one you can claim for.0 -

the tax year starts on the 6th of April, if you read the link again properly you will see the table that clearly gives the answer to your Q as there are only 2 tables to look at: table 1 or table 2 .... given its now 2013 the answer is the same anyway!0 -
Just being picky, once upon a time in the days when I thought HMRC had to obey the law of the land of England and I had 6 years. I rushed to make the UK deadline that I thought was the 5th April only to find out the hard way that HMRC had its own deadline of 5 years and about 10 months making it 31st January. Silly me, that lesson cost about £250.
Now that we have a tax system riddled with penalties and charges 24 hours can really count.

It is called a deadline because when you stepped over it to approach the prison fence, you got shot.0
