Ninth Anniversary 1,000 Posts Name Dropper I've been Money Tipped!
    Success for me.

Got over £100 back and they've now changed my tax code so I don't need to keep asking every few years.
Was more difficult as I had changed jobs in the time where I could have claimed it back but all in all, a nice little bonus :)

    Uniform Washer
I sent a letter off about 2 weeks ago claiming back since 2008. Anyway I had to ring up regarding a new job so new tax code. And whilst on phone mentioned if they had received my letter. She seemed to suggest that I had already been receiving uniform tax for the past 5 years.

But how can this be if my tax code is just the normal one of 944l

Hope I get a letter suggesting I get something.

I'm intending to claim this for my other half and, due to the dirty and outdoor nature of his job, I think there's a chance that he may be entitled to more than the very basic rate but I can't figure out what Industry Sector he falls into and they ask that you put this in the claim letter.

Just wondered if anyone out there who does/used to work in tax or has a good knowledge of what Industry Sector/rebate rate his particular job should come under can give me a bit of guidance on this.

He works at a car repair place but is not a mechanic. The only mention I could find of trades to do with car repair was 'Motor mechanics in garage repair shop' under 'Trades ancillary to engineering'
His official job title is merely 'Valet' but this doesn't convey the half of it.

His job is cleaning the exterior and interior of cars which have been worked on by the company's mechanics prior to them going back to the customer. As well as ordinary car washing and valeting, this includes using chemicals to remove oil/grease, stains, chemicals, spillages and debris caused by the repair process and using specialist chemicals to remove small errors in new paintwork. The work takes place in an open air yard, in all weathers, year round. His uniform usually gets absolutely filthy with grease/chemicals and muddy water from the yard floor by lunchtime and he has to wash it after only one days wear.

His employer supplies a basic uniform of Polo shirt, Sweatshirt, knitted hat and canvas work trousers, all with logo. He's required to supply heavy footwear and severe-weather waterproof and thermal items himself/at his own expense.

Any help from someone who has good knowledge of this appreciated - thanks.

Job description wise this seems to be the closest
    Garage hands including cleaners. 80

Don't forget though that you get tax relief not actually 80 so trying to claim £80 instead of £60 will give your OH an extra 8 pence per week.

Ooops, posted a new thread for this question intending to come back & delete this post as it was a v. long thread & thought my specific query would get lost in it. Seems you answered my question though D&C while I was posting the new one.

Thanks - I did see 'Garage hands including cleaners' but it was under 'Public Service: Public Transport' and OH works in a private car crash repair place so I'm not sure that this would be right. Thanks for looking though - I will leave the other thread up & see if I get any more ideas as well. If not, maybe I should just describe his job along the lines of what I put above and let HMRC decide.....

  • Hey sorry I couldn't figure out how to post a new thread, I'm new to this website,
    I have a HUGE problem,
I went through a third party company called Axiom tax to reclaim money for washing my uniform at home, I did this because a work colleague of mine was in the process of doing the same,
I got sent the paperwork which I sent back, and in time the tax office sent my paperwork back saying that the money will be paid to that company, the company would send me my money less a fee, except now I don't receive a reply from the emails I send or the phone calls I left, I did however ask for a new information pack under an alias which was duly sent out so I know the company is still active,
I've tried to search as to what to do and report them but ombudsman haven't replied to the email and nor have watchdog,
I've ended up loosing money, but I'd like if anything to get this company brought down.
    Can anyone help?

    Many thanks.
  • Not sure this is a HUGE problem. Maximum repayment (total for past 4 years) would normally be about £45 so annoying yes but not the end of the world.

What did you sign which allowed HMRC to pay your refund to this company? Will this company be entitled to any future tax repayments or have you cancelled the authority you signed?
  • Thanks for your reply,

Well I managed to get £300+ back on the information Hrmc sent me, so I would of been owed £250 after thy took there fee.
From memory it wasn't for future stuff just for this particular one, Hrmc have no idea either if this is a legit company, when I asked.
