got a letter back yesterday saying a was due a rebate for 2008/9 and 2011/12.
However, there was a slight tax underpayment in 2009/10 and 2010/11, but that wont be collected.
guess what there saying it that for those years my tax rebates pays for my tax underpayment??0 -
My husband is in the army and we wrote to our tax office about a year ago, my husband has since spoken to the tax office and they said they were awaiting confirmation from the army, which we know will never ever happen. Does anyone have any idea what we could do please?
Many many thanks.0 -

get him to look at his tax code , if it is anything other than 810 then he cannot claim for this as he already has it
clearly your husband got a HMRC call centre person whose training has gaps0 -
I work as a special constable (volunteer police officer) and wrote to HMRC explaining this asking for tax relief on laundering my uniform. They wrote back clearly not understand the words 'special constable' or 'volunteer police officer' as they said they did not have details of my new employment.
I went to call them to clarify what their cryptic letter meant but was on hold for 10 minutes - the helpline recorded menu is so LLLLOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG is it maddening.
I went on the website again and eventually found this:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM68131.htm
which basically says that because I am paid zilch and therefore no PAYE is paid by the police service, I am not able to get any tax relief!
Just posting this to help anyone in the similar situation as me who tries to contact HMRC about tax relief on voluntary work.
Martin said on the programme this week that police can reclaim, but as you say, specials don't qualify as they don't get paid. I could understand if you don't pay tax at all that you shouldn't get the allowance but I think if you have another full time job it would only be fair to offset the allowance against that.
HMRC says "expenses can only be set against the earnings from the employment to which they relate (Section 328 ITEPA 2003)". It would be helpful if Martin clarified that for the hundreds of specials out there.0 -
Hi
I am wondering if someone could help me. I sent a letterof to HMRC and got a response back within 2 weeks to say that they have looked into my claim for washing and buying some of my uniform and that my tax code will change but no refund with it ?? I have worked for my company for quite a few years will they now contact me with a refund for the max 4 years
thanks
You should get your money back but it maybe through your tax allowance rather than a cheque by the sounds of it. Mine came back this way, as it was for about £150, although I did it a couple of years ago. Just check your tax code to make sure the changes have been applied. Hope this helps0 -
Do I have to know what amount I'm asking for back or will they work that out for me?0

Is that new?
It certainly wasn’t the case when I was a taxman.
admittedly I haven't searched long for proof on HMRC as a quickie on armed forces produces TA/reserves results rather than regulars
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim50120.htm
whilst its now relatively old, believe me if things had changed for regulars then the "army rumour service" would have commented on it by now in its usual blunt fashion!
So what they said then probably still holds now, so check out the various MOD refernces contained in this thread...

I've done this for myself & my wife, but i'm now looking into it for my brother & sister, but can't seem to find anything on: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm
My brother did work in a garage where they had their overalls washed by the company.
He has since been shifted sideways in the same company & is now a driver (HGV). He now no longer has overalls & instead has a company uniform with logo that he is required to wash himself.
I've looked on the link & can't find a specific role for him. I find public transport, but to me this is things such as buses & not company HGVs transporting building materials.
Can he claim? If so, under what title there?
As for my sister, she works as a sort of nursery nurse looking after kids. She's bank staff at the moment, but she also wears a uniform with a logo & is required to wash it herself.
Thing is, i couldn't find a title for her either under that link.
Just wondering if they can both claim? Not for previous years, but to get their tax code changed for this year onwards, like i did with mine & the wifes?
Thanks.0
