  • Hi can some tell me if you have to keep re-applying for the tax allowance ? l have claim before, but i am still in the same job.

  • I'm just in the process of doing this. I've been with my current employer since January 2006 and before that I wasn't a tax payer.

    Due to the allowance changing from £45 to £60, how would I complete the line?:
    I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £xx for each year since the above date.

    The furthest you can now go back is now 2008/09, 4 years. So all these old allowances are now out of date.

    What about part of uniform washed at home. I'm not in title of using laundry service for shirts but trousers and jackets are send to dry cleaning paid by my employer.

    I work for the railway and have done sice 2004 but i know i can only claim as far back as 2008

    anyway how much do i claim for each year ? i clean all my own uniform which includes shirts, trousers, jackets, the lot and all of it has the company logo on it

    thanks for any advice :beer:

    in other words make a bit of effort to do some research yourself

    I've just typed up a letter with the following

    Dear Inland Revenue

    RE: Expenses Allowance

    [FONT=Trebuchet MS, sans-serif]I have been employed at X as a Y from [start] until [end]. I was obliged to launder the uniform, which was supplied to me by the company. The facilities on the premises only included a tumble dryer and the uniform supplied consisted of a jacket with logo, shirts with logo, trousers, cravat with logo, waterproofs, scarf, gloves, hat, thermals and walking boots. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance for the period mentioned above.[/FONT]

    I included employer ref. at the top as well as my nino and other relevant details (employer's address etc).
    The text I feel covers everything: job title, what facilities were available, what my uniform consisted of, the period I worked for the company.

    the only 'mistake' I've just made is (by going on text of the very first few posts) is sending it to my local tax office.

    edit: I haven't included the amount although that's probably £60. Since I don't work for the same employer anymore and I have paid tax (code 647L for 2010 and 747L for 2011, I did already get some back as I'd overpaid) during that period, I'd possibly get a cheque. Although I'm not sure it'll be for the full amount of (20% of £60) £12 as I've worked for the company slightly less than 11 months. I'll try to remember to post back (:

    you can't get the uniform tax credit if you didn't pay enough tax to cover the uniform tax refund, but since the uniform refund can be a little as £12 then provided you've still paid that (or more) in tax after your other refund, then yes you could claim
