  • Thank you to mikeyorks for his reply yesterday, but I now have another question for you knowledgeable folks! I received a cheque today as a rebate for my professionals fees for the year 2008-2009. I understand that they have reduced the time frame over which you can claim, despite the fact I submitted my claim in January but hey ho. So just wondering what happens to the subsequent years 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12. Will this be all or will I receive a separate cheque for each of those years? They have also made no reference to a rebate in terms of washing my uniforms either so will wait to hear about that. Many thanks :D

As regards the years you can claim back - they will honour all the years that were still in play at the date of your original claim.

Don't understand the above, however. They normally issue a single cheque covering all the years they reconcile. How much is the cheque (and how do you know it's 08-09 only ...... as I don't normally get such benevolence from HMRC ;))?

    Occasionally they don't.

My colleagues have been applying for rebates for professional fees via HMRC after I stopped them using a firm which charged £40 for the privilege.

Despite them all applying the same way, some have had their tax code adjusted to provide the rebate, some have had a cheque for the whole amount and some of them have had a mixture of cheque for part and tax code change for the other part. It seems that it was down to who processed it at HMRC.

At the top of the letter it says tax calculation for tax year 2008-2009. The letter itself says "you are due a repayment of income tax for the year shown above. A cheque for £75.72 is attached. My calculation of this amount has been sent to you separately."

I did think it wasn't particularly good for the environment issuing individual cheques for each year :rotfl:

A cheque for £75.72 is attached.

Surprising. As - at 20% - that implies an additional allowance of £378.60 (ignoring repayment supplement - which will be included). Which seems excessive for a single year? In particular as you indicated the subscription was circa £76? Perhaps there's also a genuine overpayment included in it?
I think you can only wait until all the documents materialise.

They don't. Where they're dealing with several years they issue a composite cheque. As clarified at note 16 on the P800 (Notes) you will get (their bold) :-

(If the repayment covers more than one tax year, we will send you one cheque which will cover all
    the years we have reviewed)

Think we're at cross purposes there Jem? I realise they seem to mix and match refund cheques and Coding in. But where they issue a refund for several years reconciled together - I've never known other than a composite cheque. Which is what I was referring to.

As post #1366 above ..... they normally only issue one cheque for all years calculated together. If he pays tax at 20% then £33.81 (there will be a bit of interest included) implies at least £150 in extra allowances. Which seems too much if you're only expecting £60pa in allowance?

It does state on the letter for years 2010-2011. Quoted extract below.
I am pleased to tell you that you are due a payment for the year shown above.

A cheque for the sum of £33.81 is attached below

My calculation for this amount has been sent to you separately.
Now the strange thing is, we have been sent the calculations for 2008-09 and 2009-10 but not the one for 2010-11. If the amounts given for the years 2008-2010 are added together they come to £33.93. So still none the wiser. scratch_one-s_head.gif
