If your specific job title isn't on the list of those eligible is it ok to reword to letter from "I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £?? for each year since the above date." to "I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance for each year since the above date." and let them work out how much it should be.

Yes. There is more info tucked away within the HMRC website but it's not really worth hunting for it. If it's not on the list on post #1 of this thread then just specify the employer you work for / the specific job you do and the reason ('mandatory uniform with logo' etc) you're claiming.

Yes - provided the jobs entailed a defined uniform and she had to wear it. Single letter - but do include the employers involved.

    Thank you,

I have set the letter out with details about current employer etc, then at the bottom explained she would like to claim for the same expenses then cut and paste the details and dates from her CV.

They all include either Pharmacy or retail, both had provided uniforms with company details requiring her to wash and dry etc.

All we can find is her NI number at the moment, and obviously the taxes office were different for each employer so we'll send it off the the address above in Liverpool.

    Thanks for the advice.

Will post when she gets a response

Far too late I'm afraid. They've just reduced the back years from 6 to 4. So 2008-09 is the latest you can go back now.

  • I wrote in but was told this was already accounted for in my tax code. For most of the Police/Customs/Prison Services there is no refund. :o(

DH got another letter from the tax man (still no cheque) which seems to have a typo as it shows his tax code going down to 816L from 846L with the non uniform rate being 810L. Last years has gone from 747L to 753L, so why his code was higher to start this year I have no idea

The stock reply from HMRC is that they are not eligible. As there is a tax free allowance already built into pay for maintenance of uniform - and it includes laundering. Link below to a fairly recent exchange on the subject.
