I'm sorry if this has been asked before but it is a very long thread:eek:
Do you still have to work there and do they contact your previous employer.

No you don't still have to work there. You can claim back up to 4 years so it depends when you worked there. They will not contact the employer.

I just phone hmrc re my hubby being due a rebate as he is a postie since 2003 and a retained firefighter since 2007, They told me he is entitled to a tax allowance of £689 - meaning a cheque is on its way for £137. However when i asked if he was getting an allowance for both jobs (which i believe he should be as he wears logoed uniforms for both which we wash at home) they were unable to answer or give me details of how the amount was calculated. Can i push for this? I just thoughtn his tax rebate would have been a bit higher due to the 2 jobs?

    Thanks
If your other half is a postie I think you'll find that his tax code includes an allowance for uniform washing. I think it is £120 per year making his code 12 higher than the normal tax code. It would pay to check as our dear hmrc will want back anything they over pay you.

I work in IT and have to wear a polo shirt and fleece with company logos/branding, trousers and black shoes.

i can't see my industry sector in the list, can i claim?

Yes. Don't worry too much about the sector - let HMRC sort that out. Just give them your NI number / employer Ref (from P60) and the basic details you've provided here.

I am looking for the details for my husband to claim this and we cannot find an Employee Number on any documents. We have found an old tax rebate letter with a Tax Reference number on the top which looks like this, xxx/Cxxxx. Is that the correct number to use?

Also, the tax office address, will it be the same one that is on the rebate letter? I cannot find the address the company use on any documents and their offices are shut for a while due to Easter.

    Thank you.

It's the Employer Ref you need. Normally on the P60. But the format you specify is the right one. Use that - but make sure his NINO is the prime one you quote.

No. If you haven't had recent correspondence then it's this one :-

If your specific job title isn't on the list of those eligible is it ok to reword to letter from "I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £?? for each year since the above date." to "I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance for each year since the above date." and let them work out how much it should be.

I've just applied for a tax rebate relating to uniform cleaning and Fed subscriptions and received a new tax code which took into account two years worth of backdated rebates. I also told a colleague and gave him a copy of the letter I wrote. Instead of an increased tax code he received a cheque for the tax rebate. We both got the same end result but despite using the same letter and same tax office we got our rebates in different ways. Strange really and just something to be aware of.
