My husband said he doesnt pay tax on it (last month it was £10.60), so he doesn't get the £10.60 in his pocket, just the benefit of not paying the tax on that sum if that makes sense
Sorry, but it doesn't. If he's sacrificing that value and then getting it back (even tax free) ...... we're talking about a £2pm benefit in tax terms. Which doesn't sound as though the employer is giving him a laundry allowance ....... if he's paying it in the first instance.
However the £24pa 'benefit' does exceed the allowance HMRC would normally give (eg £100 allowance equals £20 in 'cash'). But it still sounds a perverse way of doing it. Still suggest a word with his employer / payroll? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Let's clarify some things:
repayment post - currently running at around 4 weeks to be dealt with (plus post time "10-14 working days")
time limits for paye repayments - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/overpaid-thro-job.htm#4
claiming prof subs etc. - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/list3.pdf or http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/list3.htm
fixed rate expenses* (incl washing uniform claims) - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm
*there may be locally agreed amounts for specific employers.
If your employer/trade isn't covered you may still have your claim considered....0 -

Not sure I am doing this right but here goes!
2 years ago we claimed to have my husband tax code adjusted because he wears the company logo on his uniform and therefore is advertising for them ( he is a London bus driver). The backdated payment came through and his tax code was adjusted accordingly.
My question is: would this have incorporated the Laundry Allowance for uniforms or do I need to make a separate claim on his behalf? I wash and repair his uniform at home.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks0 -

That is all it would be for. There's no allowance for advertising - either via a logo'd uniform or a liveried bus!
Look at the P2 (Coding notice) last received ...... should explain it adequately. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Yes. They're working post at under the 3 month point now (wasn't the case a year ago).
Hey,
I submitted slaims for both myself and my partner in December as well and still haven't heard anything.
I'm thinking of re-posting our letters as perhaps the origionals got lost in the christmas post.
Advice please?

If it was not logo'd HMRC might have a go at cutting your husband's PAYE code for being paid in the form of benefits in kind.
You would then argue that the second hand value of the suit was next to nothing because husband is a 3 ft tall dwarf or a 25 stone monster.0 -

Worth a go - although surprisingly few items 'get lost in the post'. They mainly get lost once they've reached the recipient. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
DH got the letter back today. No idea of the amount yet but a cheque for 2 years is promised, but will have to wait for last years as he just missed the boat.Truth always poses doubts & questions.
