I would imagine the £689 is for both jobs. It goes back 6 years (neither job exceeds £80 currently) and the rates were increased in 08-09. Wait until you get the P800s showing the allowance - they will tell youIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

I got my refund by cheque this week - must admit that I was expecting a bit more. I'm Police Control room (civilian) staff, but we wear the same trousers as police officers, and the same shirts that PCSO's used to wear (we're victims of the cast offs!) and so to get the £60 pa rather than the £140 pa for PC's and PCSO's seems harsh - we work the same shifts as them (but get to stay in the comfy warm!)
Still £52 is £52 whichever way you look at it, and so I'm a happy easter bunny0 -
I got my letter today from the tax office. I even managed to persuade them to put me on the police rate of £140 per year because my place of work paid for me to be upgraded to an accredited officer (bit like a plastic policeman). It's a shame that the reality is that I only get a lump of cash of around £74.48 but every little helps, and I even sent the letter through the works post system so it cost me nothing to do.0

Hi All,
After providing a bit more info to HMRC I have had a letter back with an adjustment to my tax code which is because of backdated and this years allowance. However I am struggling to understand all of it, so if I could get some assistance it would be much appreciated. Listed on the front page is:
Earlier Years Adjustement: £173 (Note 2)
Flat Rate Job Expenses: +£60 (Note 3)
Now Note 2 Says:
06/07, £45.00 x 22%, £9.90 (plus some interest)
07/08, £45.00 x 22%, £9.90 (plus some interest)
08/09, £60.00 x 20%, £12.00 (plus some interest)
09/10, £60.00 x 20%, £12.00 (plus some interest)
10/11, £60.00 x 20%, £12.00 (plus some interest)
11/12, £60.00 x 20%, £12.00 (plus some interest)
Total £ 68.81, Adjustment/increase in code = £68.81 x 100/20 = £345.00.
Therefore I would have thought that the earlier years adjustment would have been £345.00 and not £173.00. Also in 11/12 and 10/11 I was into 40% tax so shouldn't this have been calculated at 40% rather than 20%?
I didn't get a cheque, but an adjustment to the tax code, which I prefer as I had an underpayment last year due to week 53 tax calculations so I am trying to counteract that really (195 underpaid tax, so -488 on the "underpayment restriction").
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I can only assume - that the £173 is half the £345 - and they're expecting you're still on 40% and will therefore get the relief allocated at that rate?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Hi Mike,
Thanks once again, I had tried all kinds of calculations and couldn't get to the £173, but the original amount at 40% is £172.05, so it would round up to £173. The same with the underpayment of Tax from last year they have worked out the repayments on 40% tax, so it would be a safe assumption that they have done the same with this.
The only slight issue is that if they know in 10/11 I was on 40%, and I am also for 11/12 (Although they may not know this yet, and I was marginal in 10/11) why haven't they given me 40% relief on the last 2 years?
I think for another £24.00 (effective cash) back off next years tax code, I don't think it is worth another letter, what do you think?
Thanks again.
Cheers

Has anyone tried claiming for the Armed Forces?
My husband tried and the response was NO "free laundry facilities are available to all armed forces personnel".
I know if you live in the single blocks there is washing machines available, but you still have to buy your own detergents.
As married forces we have never been offered any free facilities or vouchers to launder my husbands uniforms.
Am I missing something!!!
I think if your an Officer you get a tax free allowance for uniform, but everyone else does not so strange why they would say he does.0 -
i know so many ppl who are doing this well worth it0

If I'm no longer employed at the place where I had to launder my own clothes can I still claim? I stopped working there 2 yrs ago but laundered my clothes for 6 years prior to leaving.0

Yes you can, it doesn't matter if you don't work there anymore.
If it's been 2 years you should probably also launder your clothes as a matter of urgency.0
