  • So after reading this thread my partner sent a letter to tax office with all the required information on it-stated rebate in the form of a cheque, weeks after hearing nothing and having to resend the letter recorded delivery as the first one was lost he rang them today to be told yes you have £528 tax relief and your code has been changed but no cheque, he said that he was told if he wanted rebate in form of cheque then this is what he would get but she said he was not entitled to a cheque and only for his tax code to be changed, she also said that he could not appeal or complain as it would make no difference as his tax code has now been changed. seems a bit unfair as other people have had cheques, and it was hearing martin on radio2 that prompted us to look on here to claim it. any ideas as to why they have done this?

    So it will be

    06-07 = £9
    07-08 = £9
    08-09 = £12
    09-10 = £12
    10-11 = £12
    11-12 = £12

    Total = £66

    Paul

At 20% ........ that will be it. Plus an extra £60 allowance in your 12-13 coding.

Most who ask for a cheque do get one. But it sometimes appears to depend on who deals with it.

If the amendment is to 12-13 then the refund (£528 @ 20% = £106) will be spread over the year. As it's a bit too late to amend 11-12.

  • Thanks mikeyorks - seems a bit unfair though, shouldnt matter who deals with it they should deal with everyone the same.

i think the foot wear is more aimed at groups like nurses and others that need the specifically for work. ie safety boots

Remember if the safety footwear covers the ankle it is a "boot" not a "shoe" an the purchase price does not include the normal 20% Value Added Tax.

if my employer was paying me £8.36 a year laundry allowance, would i still be entitled to backdated payments for the difference?
i work for a local authority as a cook supervisor.

Afraid not. Where the employer provides cash / vouchers or laundry facilities ....... HMRC won't entertain a claim.

Yes you can claim tax on the difference but it's probably less than £10 a year.

  • Hi, I was employed in 2 jobs both PAYE employers - one was an office job and the other is food preparation - however the food prep job isn't taxed and my taxable deduction came from the higher income job (the office one).

Both employers use different Tax offices - so 2 questions really:

    (1) Can I claim tax allowance on the uniform even though the tax has been deducted from a larger income source?
    (2) Which tax office would I write to?

Thanks in advance to any replies!
