(1) Can I claim tax allowance on the uniform even though the tax has been deducted from a larger income source?
You can claim the allowance but - as you infer - it's a bit pointless if it's against a job where you weren't paying tax. Unless you file SA Returns ...... you can't put all the income together for the year in order to take advantage of the extra bit of allowance. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi, I was employed in 2 jobs both PAYE employers - one was an office job and the other is food preparation - however the food prep job isn't taxed and my taxable deduction came from the higher income job (the office one).
Both employers use different Tax offices - so 2 questions really:
(1) Can I claim tax allowance on the uniform even though the tax has been deducted from a larger income source?
(2) Which tax office would I write to?
Thanks in advance to any replies!
I'm sure you can do this, as long as you had both jobs in the same tax year.
The tax isn't attached to your jobs as such, both salaries make up a part of your earned income upon which tax is charged.
If you've got 2 jobs there is much higher chance that the wrong amount of tax has been deducted, this could be either too much or not enough.0 -

Agree with that. But I know there have been cases in the past where people have tried to claim an allowance for a low paid or volunteer job - in order to set off against another concurrent PAYE job. And it's been refused.
If you could get the allowance in the first instance. Then SA (or a P8oo) would weld the incomes together to make use of it - but I don't see how it can be carried across otherwise? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

If the income is taxable earnings you can definately claim, whether or not tax was deducted at source. For volunteer work it's not employment income as there is no wage so you can't claim for this, even if the pay some of your expenses.
OP - If you got a P60 at the end of the year for each job you should be able to do this. If this is the case there is a good chance you've paid the wrong amount of tax over the course of the year anyway.0 -
Hi all,
Both me and my partner have worked in a number of jobs throughout the last 6 years, almost all of which required a logo-bearing uniform. We're hoping to claim back the tax allowance, but I just wanted to clarify that at the bottom of the template letter where my tax code goes, is it my current tax code I should put? I also assume I sent a separate letter covering each job?
Hoping to get these letters in by 31st March so we can claim the whole 6 years, rather than 4.
Thanks!

It would be the current tax code. But omit it - I can't see any relevance. But do include your Employer Ref (from your p60) if you have it ...... alongside your NI number.
Just the single letter needed ......... but list the employers / dates for clarityIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
my husband claimed his but he also just for a change in tax code, although he asked for a refund by cheque.0

I'm still waiting for mine to be processed although I think I'm due about £95. I really hope I am sent a cheque for my backdated amount because I no longer work full time and am going to be cutting down my hours substantially. I don't think I'll earn enough to get the benefit from a higher personal allowance considering that's getting a substantial increase next week. What would I do if this were to happen? Presumably I'm still entitled to the money...Sealed Pot Challenge #239

My hubby is a postie (tax code 747l) and a retained firefighter tax code BR (basic rate). Can he claim a uniform allowance for both as they both have logos on and both have to be washed at home by me.0
-
I just phone hmrc re my hubby being due a rebate as he is a postie since 2003 and a retained firefighter since 2007, They told me he is entitled to a tax allowance of £689 - meaning a cheque is on its way for £137. However when i asked if he was getting an allowance for both jobs (which i believe he should be as he wears logoed uniforms for both which we wash at home) they were unable to answer or give me details of how the amount was calculated. Can i push for this? I just thoughtn his tax rebate would have been a bit higher due to the 2 jobs?
