I work in a school canteen, we have always had a small laundry allowance around £7.84 a year. this April that is being stopped under single status. can i claim back anything? that doesn't seem a lot as i need clean jacket and aprons daily.

We have always been told we have to wear suitable footwear i.e closed in shoes, flip flops and sandals are out of the question (i carry gallons of boiling liquid to and from the cooker) can i claim for footwear to? i go through 2 pairs a year

"eek, I think you've just put me off McD's for life! Grease on shoes, I had never thought about that!"

Haha the floors in both places are greasy (you can't see the grease mind). At least in KFC they have anti slip tiles and provide you with anti slip shoes, the combination works 90% of the time, there is still the occasional moment where somebody slips or falls on their bottom!

Anyway, having just looked at the HMRC website I THINK I am entitled to the following:

    Deduction for2004-05 - 2007-08 £45
    Deduction for2008-09 onwards £60

    So I worked for McD 04-08 so that's £45 x 4= £180
I work for KFC from 08-present (so seen as Tax year is almost up I shall include 11-12) so that's £60 x 4 = £240

    £240+£180=£420

Now I have just thought of something that may pose a slight problem...I quit McD in Feb 08 and joined KFC Feb 08...will that affect how much I'm entitled to?

    Cheers
    Paul

I have been employed at Company Name, Location since (Date of Starting at Employment). I am obliged to launder the uniform, which is supplied to me by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £xx for each year since the above date.

Hi paul no he dosent normally but has done so a few times also his code is 761L SO dont know if he gets relief or not

Why not look at the Coding Notice he will get? There's an extra £140 of allowances in there for some reason - odds on it is protective clothing and the maintenance thereof?

You can only claim back to 06-07 ...... and that expires 31st March.

If it's 'food preparation' you will get £60 of relief from 08-09. just include the dates of employment in the letter and head it with your NINO and the current Employer Ref (off the p60). Address it to Liverpool (precise address scattered in posts a few pages back).

Bear in mind that if you pay tax at 20% then the £60 relief is £60 @ 20% = £12pa

  • Cheers for that...how do I know what % tax I'm paying?

I have no clue about all this tax stuff, it's all greek to me! All I know is my current tax code is 747L and I ave no clue where my P60's are (just to confirm, they are the end of year ones aren't they)

    Cheers

    On 747L ....... if you're earning under £42,475 then you'll be paying 20%. 40% over that figure.

Yes - the P60 is the end of year statement from the employer (and vital to keep)

  • So it will be

    06-07 = £9
    07-08 = £9
    08-09 = £12
    09-10 = £12
    10-11 = £12
    11-12 = £12

    Total = £66

Well, my OH finally got the letter back today (sent letter to HMRC at the start of Jan) and despite us clearly requesting for a refund cheque he got a tax adjustment and a new tax code. Don't suppose it makes much difference, it's just we really could have done with extra cash right now...
