Wash your uniform at home ?

No. The £283 is an additional tax allowance. So if you pay tax at 20% then it will give you back (as this is Month 12) £283 @ 20% = £56. If you pay 40% - then double the £56.
Just as the extra £60 in your Coding next year is worth £60 @ 20% = £12.
PS ..... this years Code has been increased by £340 ........... so that is worth £68 less tax to pay this month.
So I might get £124 extra in my wages?
Im so pleased theres people in this world who understand this stuff0 -
Im hoping someone can advise, as myself and my husband may fall into this catergory but really not sure how it works for us.
My OH is in the RAF, now I have looked on the net and previously it seems the figure of £140 a year was banded around - the thing is he has multiple uniforms (greens, blues etc) and I think the £60 a year is quite stingy for them considering the police get more, but if they are not on the list then I assume all we get is the £60 flat fee?!
Next is me - I work mainly in the office without a uniform but I have a site kit of various high vis and a work branded jumper (although this is not compulsory). I feel maybe im stretching the criteria claiming for my washing expenses but do you think its possible?

another query regarding HOW my wife will get paid the amount due ...
She is a nurse - recently sent letter claiming everything she could back to 2006.
Recieved a letter from HMRC the other day stating the following:
we have allowed you tax releif for your expenses for the years 2006/7 - 2011/2012
for the tax year 2011/12 you will recieve teh relief through your tax code as flat rate expenses etc
for the years 2006/07 - 2010/11 you will receive this relief directly through your tax code, through an earlier years adjustment
2011/12 is self explanatory but what is an Early year adjustment ? I suppose the queston is, will she recieve the 2006/7 -2010/11 as a lump sum payment in her wage packet or will it just be received as an adjustment to the current tax code and not be seen in real terms (ie, a few quid extra a month not paid in tax)
Cheers

Look at previous posts over the last few pages. My understanding is that the Services get a direct tax free allowance for this purpose. Therefore HMRC won't entertain a claim. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Both are the same thing! The alternative would have been a direct refund from HMRC. It sounds as though all the previous allowances will be bundled into her tax code. Bit unsure - at this late stage of the tax year - if they will do that for 11-12 (a lote of payrolls are run 2 weeks before they're paid) - or bundle it all in to 12-13.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Just wondering if anyone has got a rough estimate of turnaround times for a response from HMRC. I sent a letter at the beginning of January, and about 10 days later I had a reply from them asking me for my national insurance number etc. I replied with the additonal information requested on 27th January, but I still haven't heard back yet?

It's improved recently - as evidenced by your getting a response within 10 days? But you've probably pushed yourself to the back of the queue ..... so could be a week or two yet? If you read some of the other posts over the last month or so - the wait hasn't been too long.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi
My other half has used the template letter here and attempted to claim for the last 5/6 years as he is a lifeguard. We sent a letter in October and one in Jnauary but have had no replies to date.
Should we re-send the letter?
Thanks in adavance for any replies.0 -

I would call, it should be a current waiting time of 4 weeks. I rang bang on 4 weeks and it was being dealt with that day
lovely man on the phone told me everything then and the letter arrived a few days later. There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well...0
