I got issued a tax return for 07/08, but I never submitted (upon advice from employer) as I made sure I started working on a new tax year (I was self employed and ended working more and more for company I am now full time with and got them to offer me a FT job) so there was no overlap on tax years.

If you were issued an SA Return and didn't submit it - I'm surprised you haven't heard more about it. Your employer isn't an authority to tell you not to file it. HMRC are obviously of the impression :
I needed to amend my 2007/2008 tax return

    you did submit.
Am I opening a can of worms here?

...... for the sake of around £12 per annum, it may be worth just dropping it and only asking for the current year onwards?

    Hi Mikey,

I've done a bit of digging up in my files and it's also triggered my memory!

I did submit 07/08 SA Return (as you predicted!), I did this online after a few reminders (Not like me, normally pay up/give details promptly) and also took into account interest from savings. This also prompted more Student Loan payment as my employer didn't start taking this until week 19 and all math's work out correct.

Also the reason that they state 2nd May instead of 2nd April is that the company I work for changed from being a Sole Trader to a Ltd company on 1st May 2007 (after 20 years of Sole Trader!), so I guess they see this as a different employer.

So maybe i'm not opening such a can of worms!

I have checked all of my P60s since 2007 (start of full time employment) and all tax seems to work out correctly (except 10/11 as I have already had a P800, which you helped me with and was due to week 53 and 40% tax), so I think I am covered on dropping myself in it as others have stated on this forum!

    Thoughts would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Dan

I remembered the P800. We will hear more of Week 53 underpayments in subsequent years! ;)

The problem with amending your 07-08 Return (was that the last one you submitted?) is that you're out of time. And have to follow (from this thread) this rather quaint procedure. Surprised HMRC didn't mention it as I suspect they may have a form to act as guidance?

Other than that - yes just go ahead with it. If you're 40% then obviously it's worth double the figure I gave.

Glad I'm rememberable, I can't remember if I got back to that thread, but after a bit of "discussion" with HMRC our internal accounts dept, sage and companies accountants thought I didn't have to pay difference, but HMRC insisted, so 11/12 tax code has been reduced (one of the reasons that prompted me to claw back something else!).

07/08 was last return, I think I wrote to them, as in my files I've got a letter saying that I no longer need to file as I am in full time employment (even though 07/08 was, but last one after self employed). They we're no form's that they gave me, so we'll see what they say about 07/08, if I can't claim then hopefully I can from 08/09 anyway.

I am 40% for 10/11 and 11/12 so it should be worth a couple of letters!

    Cheers

  • My brotherinlaw works for a cash and carry and has a uniform, my sister (his wife) works for a cafe with a uniform, I have looked at the expenses but can't see what occupation they would come under?

Presumably she would come under food? But what would they put shop workers under?

    Thanks, Carol.

    .

Under 'retail' I assume (which isn't listed)? Just put the NINO and the Employer Ref (from the P60) on the letter - then give the basic detail of the claim? And let HMRC work out the detail of the allowance - which is likely to be £60 in each case.

  • Thanks, I'll tell them about this as they are both on low wages and anything clawed back is good x

Bear in mind the £60 is 'tax relief' ...... so it only is beneficial where someone pays tax. And it's benefit is at their marginal rate - which will be 20% ? So that's £60 x 20% = £12pa. Not a lot but covers the soap powder! And they can claim back to 06-07 ...... but that year expires 31st March.

  • Talked to my sister tonight, they both already claim, their tax codes are both 753L £60 greater than the basic 747L. At least they were claiming x

  • Hi there

My hubby sent a letter off a few weeks ago claiming a total of £550. we got a letter back today stating 2006/7, 8/9, 9/10 and 11/12 has been reviewed in respect of the flat rate expense allowance. The tax calculation for each individual year and a payable order for the total amount of tax overpaid has been issued separately. Also stated is that he underpaid tax 2007/8 but no action will be taken to collect. Also 2011/12 and 12/13 codes have been amended in respect of the allowance and new codes will be issued separately.

So... we received a cheque for £73.75 for 2010/2011.

Should we expect more cheques for the other years...and why would he have underpaid tax when he been with the same employer since 2004, no expenses or benefits? And, will HMRC really not claim the underpayment back.

And finally the amended code for this year - will his employer just make that change resulting in a rebate in his coming wage?

Sorry for the ramble just a but daunting!
