Should we expect more cheques for the other years!

No. if you look at the P800s and the Notes that came with them? .... it clarifies that a single cheque will be sent covering all the years. If you follow them through you will find the last P800 shows the cumulative total. The 'adjustments' on each are the cumulative figures running through. The £550 is tax relief .... if he pays tax at 20% then it turns into £550 @ 20% = £110. But 07/08 will be excluded and 11/12 will be through pay.
...and why would he have underpaid tax when he been with the same employer since 2004, no expenses or benefits? And, will HMRC really not claim the underpayment back.

If you can't work it out - we certainly can't with no info? As regards the 07/08 underpayment - it's probably less than the £300 de minimis they were working to. So - no - they won't collect it.
And finally the amended code for this year - will his employer just make that change resulting in a rebate in his coming wage?

If the employer has the revised 11/12 Code before they start to process March pay ....... yes. But don't expect a 'rebate' - just a reduction in the tax payable.

I applied to get the tax back for cleaning my uniform as Ive seen it in the press and on here and thought I'd chance my arm as some people I work with got a cheque back.

I just received a letter saying my tax code has been revised for the current year 2011/12 and included in the revised code is an allowance dating back to 2006/7

Does this mean I can expect a bit more in my wages on my next pay day and a bit lower tax in the future?

Yes you should see a bit less tax coming off.
and a bit lower tax in the future?

Yes about £1pm lower if you are claiming the standard £60 for retail.

No one has ever mentioned this allowance to us.

Thanks to MSE I applied in December 2011 and 8 weeks later (obviously a delay time for the Christmas/New Year breaks) received a cheque for £409.00 !!! And a letter indicating that this allowance has been applied to my tax code.

I applied last month to claim tax back for laundering my work uniforms (I work for two companies, very similar jobs). Today I got a letter back from the tax office saying that one of them from 2006-07 and 2007-08 provided a £1 per day expense for laundry costs and that for 2008-09 had a salary sacrifice scheme. Apparently the £1/day should have been listed on my pay slips (but it wasn't, which may be because the original company was bought by another one). However, I'll be getting £60.00 back for the other job for the 2008-09 to now period, plus interest, which will be on its way soon and tax calculations for overpayment for 2008-09 and 2010-11 have been issued.

I also asked about work footwear costs but I can't claim for those because they can be worn outside of work and whether you do or don't is not valid. I didn't think it'd hurt to ask and at least I know now.

It only costs the price of a stamp so worth a try !

All you need to do is fill in the blanks and send it to your work's tax office.(thanks to max2002ad)

    RE: Expenses Allowance

I have been employed at Company Name, Location since (Date of Starting at Employment). I am obliged to launder the uniform, which is supplied to me by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £xx for each year since the above date.

Yes. But check that an allowance isn't already in his Code for the postman aspect. If the Code is higher than 747 ....... then it likely is. Although it may not be as easy as that if the allowance is split to also cover the fireman part. In which case you need to look at the P2 (Coding Notices)

Back again received a letter this morning sayin my tax code has changed from 747l to 781L and in the figures it says my allowance is 747L with an early years adjustment of 283 and flat rate job expenses of 60 making 7818

Does this mean I might get the 283 in my wages? Doubtful i know but we can but hope

No. The £283 is an additional tax allowance. So if you pay tax at 20% then it will give you back (as this is Month 12) £283 @ 20% = £56. If you pay 40% - then double the £56.

Just as the extra £60 in your Coding next year is worth £60 @ 20% = £12.

PS ..... this years Code has been increased by £340 ........... so that is worth £68 less tax to pay this month.
