DD's 6th form is closed again today. It was open last Thursday but she couldn't get in because there were no buses coming through our village as the roads were so bad, it was closed on Friday for teacher training and it's been closed all this week because of the weather!
Buses are running but only on the main roads and they're delayed and they often miss our village out, the bus company have also stopped all buses throughout the north-east at 7pm a couple of times the last few days. I feel for the poor bus drivers, they've had to drive in some awful conditions and if the buses are delayed or cancelled they seem to get a load of abuse from idiots. :mad:Dum Spiro Spero0 -
not caught up with the thread yet but just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the advice re snow, i got to DH safely and by this point the snow was coming down thick and fast, DH took over driving when he got to the car and it was scary - going down a hill, the brakes failled but luckily there was nothing in front of us and DH managed to get into first pretty quickly and slow the car right down!
further along the car in fromt of us didn't have very good traction and was slipping and sliding all over the place(we stayed well back) then when we were almost home, on the small roundabout near us, a car spun round 360 degrees and crashed into a bollard - luckily the driver seemed ok and sorted the car out and managed to drive off(but still at speed) i was glad when we got home!!0 -
More heavy snow here in the Peak District. The milkman hasn't made it through yet although the paper boy did. Will have to go out for milk if he doesn't come.
Watched my neighbour clear his drive at 6 a.m this morning but it's all covered up now. DH has gone for the train, they were running according to the internet.0 -
It's the first time that our milkman hasn't arrived. It's bin day today but I can't see the binmen turning up either.
The snow cake on my round table outside seems to have another layer added.

Getting off very lightly here - bitterly cold - and very solid and hard to break ice in the troughs today - even the wee burn at the bottom of the croft has ice on it, and the edge of the sea, probably the water on the beach rather than the sea itself freezing, has been pushed into sheets and shards of ice along the tideline. But no snow and roads mostly dry so driving not too bad either, especially as our roads are so potholey and gravelly anyway they are effectively self-gritting!
Apart from the sweetie situation it sounds as if you are well prepared, Mardatha but it must be a worry for your neighbour if her electricity card is going to run out and she can't get another one. Hope everyone else is coping OK.Jan 2011 GC £300/£150.79 (2 adults, 2 teens, working dog, includes food/cleaning/toiletries)0 -
I am quietly amazed! I thought I hadn't been stockpiling. But just done a review of the fridge and cupboards and realise that I have enough food for hubby and I to eat very well for at least a fortnight. Result! Snowed overnight and is like a blizzard outside at the moment in West Yorkshire. Two at secondary at home, school in next town is closed. DS at primary about 1.5 miles away. DH came out of work to get him there but if this snow carries on will be getting a text soon saying school closing early. The main roads are open but the snow really is coming down thick and fast, it was forecast for later in the day.
please stay safe and warm everyone.

we got some serious snow last night!!! it is easily 2-3ft in places and even more where it has drifted!!
was woken up at half 6 this morning by the alarm going off, it wouldn't bl**dy shut up, we tried everything we could but it just wouldn't shut up, IT WAS GOING OFF INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, DH ended up disconnecting the battery but that didn't help, unplugged the fuse and it stopped the noise inside but not outside - bet our neighbours love us!!
got through to an alarm company and he gave us some great advice and after almost 3 hours it's finally stopped!!!
there are no buses running here, schools are shut, phoned a few taxi places but they're not even answering the phones, the shopping centre in town is shut until further notice, the humber bridge is closed, trains aren't running either, DH has still gone to work, he debated it for 2 hours but his area manager wanted him to try and get inso he has, took him over an hour to do a 25 minute walk, i'm glad he got there safely, just worried about him getting home later as we are expected to get more snow, he said walking to work was like a scene out of the day after tomorrow, a few people walking to work and they all looked in shock at the weather!!!
oh and it's snowing again - our local papers website has just updated the weather report with a severe weather warning for NE Lincs from the met office, i shall be keeping an eye on the weather and demanding DH comes home if it gets worse!!
we put up our christmas decorations last night - i started moving furniture around to accomodate the xmas stuff and 2 hours later we had decorated the house!!!!!!!!!!!
no idea what me and DD are going to do today, she is currently sat watching tv and isn't really showing any signs of wanting to play out in the snow - thank goodness as i want to play out but don't have any gloves as DH nicked them for his walk to work!!
might do some baking as we have everything in to make stuff!!!0
