  • wow, it's cold!! no snow here yet but i reckon we will wake up to some tomorrow - fire is on, heating is on and DD is wrapped up in my shawl :D

DD is having tea soon - fishfingers and potato waffles and we are having tuna and pasta - so today is turning out to be a NSD, just like i had planned

tomorrow DH is having the car so we can try and cut down on petrol costs, which is fine by me and even more fine, if we do get snow!
we do need petrol though and i've got a 5p off per litre from Tesco and it's a bit out the way so i'm hoping DH has enough petrol to get him to work and back tomorrow(should do it's only a 4 mile round trip) and then on Friday i can do a bit of a top up shop from Tesco and get the petrol while i'm there

i did want to have the car tomorrow though as the local fire station are doing free winter health checks on cars and the first 100 people get a free can of de-icer - DH pointed out though, that's it's all well and good them doing the checks on the car, if they advise us that something is wrong then we would have to get it sorted and where would we get the money from for that - didn't tell him that i wasn't bothered about the check, i was bothered about getting the FREE can of de-icer :rotfl::rotfl:

We also had a man out from British Gas to service the boiler who has said it's incredibly inefficient and so old they can't get parts for them anymore...well I knew that!! He also bled all the radiators and said they were full of air which worries me as it's only been about a month if that since someone came and drained the system completely and ran some sort of cleaner stuff through it. Fortunately (though I'd love to own a house when I'm annoyed with my landlord!) we rent so all of this hasn't cost us anything. I rather hope that when the landlord sees the report from the boiler service (he's paying for that British Gas homecare thing for us so if we do have any problems we can get them straight out instead of waiting for him to arrange it) he'll decide to get us a new, energy efficient combi boiler so we can have heating and hot water on our gas as at the moment our heating is through that and our hot water is an old electric immersion heater thing. I don't know though, he has just reglazed the extension which can't have been cheap so I mustn't complain too much...we'll see anyway.

My house was covered by the British Gas service contract when I bought it - and I carried it on for a few years whilst I assessed how efficient (or otherwise - as it turned out:mad:) the system was - and then found myself "a little man" to take over dealing with it. British Gas charge A LOT in comparison with "a little man" - so that might give some leverage with the LL if you can find a suitable "little man" to take over from British Gas. I found it useful personally to chat a lot with the various British Gas guys when they came round (frequently - as it turned out....) about what SHOULD have been chosen in the first place/state of the existing system etc. I knew - from that - what would constitute a good system by most peoples standards (ie just about "bearable" by mine.....).
  • hiya everyone,

freezing here today, first time ive seen people struggling with their de icer this morning.

Still havent been the dentist, OH wasnt able to swap day off at work so will have to wait till friday, it will probably have eased by then so I wont go - I really dont like the dentist.

My friend passed out at school tonight whilst picking up DS1, we couldnt get hold of her hubby so I took her son into town to were he works to inform him. afterwards we popped into see OH (he works in town at vision express). He was upstairs doing pre testing so I asked the manager if he was free and she said " I thought you had a bad mouth?". I explained about why I was in town and I swear she thinks Im lying about my tooth, I also pointed out that I have to go out to collect the boys from school so it was acceptable. I really dont like her, she isnt a people person at all, she rang upstairs to see if OH was free and just said you have visitors then put the phone down. she made my day worse than it was!

OH going to his friends to watch the match - so I have control of the remote, NCIS here I come
    Mum, wife and dinnerlady!
  • Ceridwen, I had a serious problem with my gas CH back where I used to live. Also on British Gas contract. They said all pipes to/from tank completely furred up (it wasn't filling) and would need replacing at vast cost. Friend gave me name of her plumber who hit one of the pipes smartly with a spanner at which point water started flowing again - header tank valve had stuck or something. Cost me a cup of tea.

Really having a rough time atm... so my burned fingers are the least of my probs :o

hugs to all those who need them....ouch!!!
Aw Frugal, you poor love - hope life in general picks up soon and that the burn is a bit better today.

Ceridwen, haven't been lighting candles yet but will keep you in my thoughts and do my own version of praying that things go the right way for you.

And to everyone else - am hoping you are all doing ok and if not, that it gets better and better. Just reading all the good news we've had here lately is enough to reassure me that however bleak things can be, they DO get better eventually!

Congrats to alll those expecting, am delighted for all of you .... I guess people are enjoying frugal ways of having fun. :D;)

Don't know what's wrong with me but have been feeling sick and headachey over the past few hours, hope I'm not coming down with something. It feels bitterly cold here so am well tucked up with fleece rugs ... but no snow alas. Perhaps at the weekend, fingers crossed!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • Evening all, have been trying to get on here for the last two nights with no success. Have missed reading all of the posts.
Congratulations to all the mums to be:j and welcome to all of thw new posters.

Frugal have you heard anymore about your dads rehab bed or have I missed the update? I did speed read to catch up.

Cranky40 I'm not sure about using a blunt instrument on hubby but it might make it easire to get him under the patio if I use one first!

Well I have had some good news today. The BS made a mistake with the smaller of hubbys debts and it is paid off, he does not owe them £700 :j. Will write to them tonight for written confirmation as this all happened over the phone and I need confirmation in a letter for my peace of mind.

Hubby has booked an appointment to see GP on Mon re depression, but I have to say there has been a marked improvement in the few days it has been since he came clean about his debts.

The password has come through today re the Experian credit check on him so will sit down with him later and check it out.

Have also applied for my long service award. They have told me it takes a few weeks to be processed but I will then recieve £100 of Argos vouchers :).
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

I did just that a few weeks ago. Having passed the magical 60, although I still have trouble convincing myself I'm getting older, I now qualify for some concessions -- one of which was a free fire check in my home which was done by a couple of hunky firemen.

What I didn't know was that they would also fit a free smoke alarm (I had one that must have been about fifteen years old) and they gave me information about keeping safe at home and said they could arrange for other things like door chains to be fitted. They asked a few questions and answered a few that I asked them.

Apparently a lot of fire brigades do these checks for over 60s and fit a new smoke alarm. One of the firemen told me that the biggest causes of home fires are candles (no surprise there) and those multi plugs that you plug two or more appliances into. They gave me a free extension lead with a strip of four sockets, even though I'd already got some of those in use. Apparently the other kind sometimes get knocked and when they're not properly in the socket they can arc and cause fires.

He said that most candle fires are started by inappropriate holders which catch alight or are not big enough to contain the molten wax.

I have booked the kitten in to be spayed next week. She is snoring on the sofa in happy oblivion, and I feel mean....very mean.

Frugal - I hope your hand is better today.

Sending the rest of you a warm hug because it's cold!
